Generate Mogma names for Legend of Zelda OCs, fan fiction and Hyrule tabletop games: short, blunt names cut from metals, minerals, gems and mining words, like Tungs, Garnut and Bazalt, plus titled elders such as Old Chief Graphit and digging partners like Kopp and Tinn.

About Mogma names

Mogmas are the burrowing treasure hunters of Eldin in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, and the game names most of them by one clear rule: take a metal or mineral and cut or bend it into a short, blunt name. Ledd comes from lead, Cobal from cobalt, Zanc from zinc, Guld from gold, Merco from mercury, Silva from silver, Plats from platinum, Bronzi from bronze, Kortz from quartz and Nackle from nickel.

This list opens with eleven names from the game, and the rest of the 1,000 are original names that follow the same rule. Every invented name traces to a real word: a metal (Tungs, Pallad), a rarer element (Neodym), a gemstone (Garnut, Saffir), a rock (Bazalt, Flynt), an ore or crystal (Hemat, Felspa), a mining or digging word (Shaff, Pikax) or a treasure word (Hord, Gleem). The clips drop endings such as -ium and -ite, swap c for k, double a final consonant or shift a vowel, in the spirit of the game's own names.

Elders and chiefs carry a title (Old Chief Graphit, Elder Zeol), and brothers and digging partners come as pairs whose sources belong together, such as Kopp and Tinn or Realg and Orpim. These are fan names in the style of the game, and none of the original ones is canon.

How to choose Mogma names

  • Say the source word aloud and then the clip. A good Mogma name still lets a listener guess the metal or stone behind it, the way Zanc does with zinc.
  • Match the source to the character: a precious metal or gem name such as Pallad or Roobi suits a show-off, while a rock or mining name such as Bazalt or Shaff suits a plain hard worker.
  • For brothers or digging partners, pick two sources that belong together, such as the two metals of an alloy or two ores found side by side, as in Kopp and Tinn or Malak and Azzur.
  • Keep titles for the old and important. One Elder or Old Chief per group is enough, and plain one-word names carry the rest of the dig crew.
  • To make your own, take any metal, mineral or gem, cut it to one or two syllables and respell it: drop -ium or -ite, turn c into k or double the last consonant.

Frequently asked questions

How are Mogma names made in Skyward Sword?

Most Mogmas in the game are named after a metal or mineral, shortened or respelled: Ledd is lead, Cobal is cobalt, Zanc is zinc, Guld is gold and Kortz is quartz. The names are one or two syllables, blunt, and used without surnames.

Which names in this list come from the game?

The first eleven: Ledd, Cobal, Zanc, Guld, Merco, Silva, Plats, Bronzi, Kortz, Nackle and Tyto. Every other name is original, written in the same style for fan characters, and none of them is canon.

What real words do the original names come from?

Metals and alloys, rarer elements, gemstones, rock types, ores and crystals, mining and digging words and treasure words. Tungs is tungsten, Garnut is garnet, Bazalt is basalt, Hemat is hematite, Shaff is a mine shaft and Hord is a hoard. Each invented name is a clipped or respelled form, not the plain word.

Can I use these names for other burrowing or mining folk?

Yes. The clipped-mineral style works for any tunnelers, mole folk, kobold miners or dwarven prospectors in D&D, Pathfinder or original fiction. Titled names such as Elder Zeol or Boss Damasc suit crew leaders, and pairs such as Flynt and Churt suit siblings.
