Names in The Legend of Zelda are short, melodic and almost always easy to say aloud, which is part of why they stick: Mipha, Revali, Impa, Midna. Nintendo's localizers keep most names to two or three syllables, favor open vowels, and rarely use hard consonant clusters. Beyond that baseline, each race of Hyrule has its own flavor. Zora names lean aquatic and soft (Ruto, Sidon, Muzu, Bazz), Gorons sound rocky and blunt (Darunia, Daruk, Bludo, Yunobo), Gerudo names carry a warm desert cadence and often end in -a or -u (Urbosa, Nabooru, Riju, Buliara), Rito names are clipped and bird-like (Teba, Tulin, Kass, Harth), and Sheikah names borrow a Japanese-inflected sound (Impa, Paya, Purah, Dorian).

Many Zelda names are also quiet references. The three goddesses Din, Nayru and Farore share their names with the Oracle games' title characters; Bolson's construction crew all have names ending in -son; and Skyward Sword's Skyloft residents are named after birds. Villains tend to be harsher and longer: Ganondorf, Ghirahim, Zant, Vaati, Bellum, Yuga.

When picking a name for an original character, decide their race first and match the sound. Then check it against the roster here so you don't accidentally reuse a canon character unless you mean to.
