Generate minotaur names rooted in Greek myth and modern fantasy: Cretan names like Asterion, guttural warrior names with horn and hoof epithets, Dragonlance-style clan names, and female minotaur names for D&D, Theros, or your own world.

About minotaur names

The original Minotaur had a name: Asterion (or Asterius), "the starry one," the bull-headed son of Pasiphae locked in Daedalus's labyrinth beneath Knossos. That gives minotaur names two natural roots. Greek-style names end in -os, -ios, -us, or -ion and borrow freely from Cretan places (Phaistos, Malia, Zakros, Mount Ida, the Dikte cave) and from the Greek word for bull, tauros: Tauriskos, Taurion, Keraton from keras, horn. Titles work too: the Beast of Knossos, Keeper of the Maze, Son of Pasiphae.

Modern fantasy turned the lone monster into a people, and their names changed accordingly. Dungeons & Dragons, Dragonlance, Magic's Theros, and Pathfinder minotaurs tend to have short, hard given names full of k, r, g, and z sounds (Throkk, Vrokul, Ghaska, Kazrak) followed by an epithet that describes the body or the deed: Ironhoof, Bloodhorn, Nine-Scars, Tribute-Eater. Dragonlance adds formal clan prefixes (Kaz, Chot Es-Kalin, Hotak de-Droka), and many settings give minotaurs herd or clan names worth inventing alongside the individual.

When you pick one, match the name to the role. A labyrinth guardian or mythic monster suits a Greek name or a title; a barbarian PC or a warband chief suits a guttural name with an earned epithet; a female minotaur often softens the vowels (Ishka, Morra, Ulmara) while keeping the hard consonants.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide first whether your minotaur is the singular Greek monster or a member of a fantasy race. Mythic bulls take Greek names or titles; fantasy minotaurs take a hard given name plus an epithet.
  • Earned epithets beat generic ones. Nine-Scars, Tribute-Eater, or Who-Found-the-Door tell a story; Ironhoof and Redhorn are fine but common, so use them sparingly in one party or warband.
  • Build the sound from the throat: k, r, g, z, th, and double consonants (Throkk, Vrakash, Bhuul) read as bull-like, while soft l and m sounds suit elders, shamans, and females.
  • Borrow Cretan geography for a mythic feel: of Knossos, of Phaistos, of the Dikte cave, of the Nine Gates. Labyrinth imagery (turns, stairs, thread, pillars) gives an instant hook.
  • If your setting has minotaur clans, invent the clan name first (Clan Shatterhorn, House Es-Kalin) and let individual names echo its sounds.

Frequently asked questions

What was the Minotaur's real name in Greek mythology?

Asterion, sometimes written Asterius, meaning 'starry' or 'ruler of the stars.' It was also the name of the Cretan king who raised Minos, so the monster was in a sense named for his stepfather. 'Minotaur' itself simply means 'bull of Minos.'

What do D&D minotaur names sound like?

In 5e and Theros material, minotaur names are short and guttural, often ending in a hard consonant, with an epithet or clan name attached. Dragonlance minotaurs use formal clan prefixes like Es- and de- (Chot Es-Kalin, Hotak de-Droka). Names like Throkk, Kazrak, Ishka, and Vrokul Nine-Scars fit that mold.

Are there female minotaur names?

Yes. Myth gives us few, but fantasy settings have many female minotaurs. Their names usually keep the hard consonants and add open vowel endings: Ishka, Morra, Ulmara, Brakna, Ysara, Ghenna. Epithets and clan names are shared with males.

Can I use these minotaur names in my game or story?

Yes. The list mixes public-domain mythological names with original creations. A handful of canon names from Dragonlance and Theros are included as references; for commercial work, use the original names or your own variations.
