Greek Mythology Name Generator

Greek mythology names have a recognizable music because most come to us through the same route: Greek, filtered through Latin, then anglicized. That is why so many end in -us, -os, -a, -e or -eus (Perseus, Kronos, Athena, Persephone, Odysseus) and why names that look similar can belong to completely different figures. Glaucus is a sea god, a Lycian prince at Troy and a king of Corinth; Electra is a Pleiad, an Oceanid and the vengeful daughter of Agamemnon. Many names are also transparent Greek words: Nike is victory, Eris is strife, Hypnos is sleep, Phobos is fear, and the Muses, Fates and Graces are all named for what they do.

The names cluster by source. Hesiod's Theogony supplies the primordials and Titans (Chaos, Nyx, Erebus, Hyperion, Theia); Homer supplies the Trojan War and the Odyssey (Hector, Briseis, Nausicaa, Eumaeus); the tragedians give the house of Atreus and the Theban cycle (Clytemnestra, Antigone, Jocasta); and Apollonius and Ovid add the Argonauts and the transformation tales (Hylas, Daphne, Arachne, Hyacinthus).

This list spans all of those layers, from household names like Zeus and Artemis to minor Nereids, river gods and Argonauts that are rarely used and therefore still feel fresh for a character or a pet.
