Centaur Name Generator

Centaur names come from two main traditions. The oldest is Greek myth, where centaurs were the half-horse tribe of Thessaly: Chiron the healer and tutor of heroes, Pholus who hosted Heracles, Nessus whose poisoned blood killed Heracles, and Hylonome and Cyllarus, the doomed lovers of Ovid's Centauromachy. These names follow ordinary ancient Greek patterns, ending in -us, -os, -es or -e, and many are built on hippos, the Greek word for horse: Xanthippe (yellow horse), Leucippe (white horse), Melanippus (black horse), Hippodamia (horse-tamer).

The second tradition is modern fantasy. Narnia, Harry Potter and Dungeons & Dragons gave centaurs solemn, nature-watching personalities, and their names shifted to reflect it: a short given name plus a descriptive herd name like Ironhoof, Windmane, Swiftstride or Stargazer. These read well at a gaming table because they signal what the character is like before anyone speaks.

A good centaur name usually does one of three things: borrows real Greek weight (Eurytion, Asbolus, Ocyrhoe), plays on horse-related imagery (fetlock, withers, mane, gallop, hoof), or names the herd and homeland (Elandor of the Pine Herd). Mixing a Greek first name with a fantasy epithet, such as Theron Stormgallop, gives you both the mythic root and the modern flavor in one name.
