About harpy names

Harpies come from Greek mythology, and so do the best harpy names. The originals were storm spirits — daughters of Thaumas and the Oceanid Electra — and their names describe wind and speed: Aello ("storm-swift"), Ocypete ("swift-wing"), Celaeno ("the dark one"), Podarge ("fleet-foot") and Nicothoe ("swift-victory"). Later writers turned them into the foul, clawed bird-women who tormented King Phineus and were driven off by the Argonauts to the Strophades islands. A convincing harpy name therefore sounds Greek and feminine, and usually points to wind, storm, darkness, hunger, snatching or shrieking.

That gives you a simple recipe. Take a Greek root — thyella (storm), zophos (gloom), kataigis (squall), harpazo (to snatch), krauge (shriek), onyx (talon), pteryx (wing), bronte (thunder), astrape (lightning) — and give it a feminine ending such as -a, -e, -is, -ia or -ine. Thyellis, Zophira, Kataigis, Harpaxa, Kraugia, Onyche, Pterine, Brontia and Astrape all follow this pattern and sit comfortably alongside the canonical five. Names of related monsters (the Furies, the Gorgons, the Sirens) fit as well, since ancient sources frequently blurred the lines between them.

For D&D, Pathfinder and darker fantasy, harpies are often given a flock title (Roost-Mother, Talon-Queen, Wind-Sister) or a Common-tongue epithet like Ripwing or Gallowsfeather. This list covers all three styles so you can name a single monster, an entire flock or a tragic winged heroine.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Start with the canonical five (Aello, Ocypete, Celaeno, Podarge, Nicothoe) for lore-heavy settings — readers who know the myth will recognise them instantly.
  • Build new names from Greek roots for wind, storm, talon or shriek and add a feminine ending: Thyella + -is gives Thyellis, harpazo gives Harpaxa.
  • Give a flock a shared naming pattern (all names ending in -e, or all thunder-and-lightning words) so they read as a family, then break the pattern for the leader.
  • Use harsh consonant clusters (kr-, skr-, -x-) for feral or evil harpies and softer, more elegant Greek names (Zephyra, Nephele, Ourania) for sympathetic or tragic ones.
  • For tabletop games, pair a Greek name with a Common epithet — 'Kataigis Squallcrier' or 'Melaina Nightplume' — so players remember who's who.

Frequently asked questions

What are the names of the original Greek harpies?

Ancient sources name Aello, Ocypete, Celaeno and Podarge; a fifth, Nicothoe, appears in some texts. Hesiod lists only Aello and Ocypete, while Virgil makes Celaeno the leader who curses Aeneas.

Are all harpies female?

In Greek myth, yes — they are always described as winged women or bird-bodied maidens, which is why traditional harpy names use feminine Greek endings. Some modern games include male harpies, and the same roots work with -os or -on endings (Thyellos, Zophon).

What do harpy names mean?

Almost all of them describe wind or speed. Aello means storm-wind, Ocypete swift-flier, Podarge fleet-footed, Celaeno the dark or murky one, and 'harpy' itself comes from harpazein, to snatch — a reference to their stealing food from Phineus.

Can I use these harpy names in my D&D campaign or novel?

Yes. The mythological names are public domain and the rest are original creations, so they're free to use in homebrew campaigns, published fiction and games.
