Generate names for mimics, the shapeshifting monsters that pose as treasure chests, doors and furniture: cute pet-mimic names, punny disguise names, ominous titles for boss mimics and guttural monster names for D&D, Pathfinder, Baldur's Gate and your own dungeon.
About mimic names
A mimic is the dungeon's oldest joke and its most patient predator: a shapeshifter that sits for years disguised as a chest, door or bookshelf until someone reaches for the lid. That double nature is why mimic names work in two registers. The first is the disguise, so the best names sound like the furniture itself: Chester, Boxy, Old Mrs. Armoire, Lidia Lockbox, The Helpful Door. The second is the creature underneath, which wants something hungrier, usually a mouth, teeth or a hinge hidden inside the name (Trapjaw, Mawgrith, The Hungering Hinge, Vorrak).
The right style depends on the role. Players adopting a tamed mimic as a party pet want a short, affectionate handle they can shout in combat (Nibbles, Clasp, Gnawly) or a fond pun (Sir Chompsalot, Padlock Holmes). A Dungeon Master placing a single boss mimic in a vault wants a title that sounds like legend and warning at once: Keeper of False Gold, The Thousand-Tooth Trunk, Vellach, Lid of Lids. Mimics that pass as friendly furniture get gentle, trustworthy names so the betrayal lands harder, which is why Generous Gwendolyn and Very Normal Chest are here.
The generator mixes all of these so you can pull a name for a pet, a puzzle, a boss or a whole colony that has taken over a furniture shop.
Tips for choosing a name
- Name the mimic after what it pretends to be, not what it is. A mimic disguised as a lectern called Little Miss Lectern or a wardrobe called Wardrobe Wanda tells your players exactly what they should have been suspicious of.
- For pet mimics, pick something two syllables or fewer that sounds good yelled across a battlefield: Boxy, Clasp, Knobby, Chomper. Save the long ominous titles for enemies.
- If you want players to trust the mimic before it bites, avoid anything with jaw, maw, tooth or trap in it. Patient Percy and The Quiet Barrel set up the reveal far better than Gnashbox.
- Boss mimics deserve an epithet with a story behind it, like Oskram the Everclosed or The Merchant's Regret. Decide what the mimic ate to earn that title and drop hints around the dungeon.
- Mimics in a shared household or hoard can follow a family convention: all puns (Crate Expectations, Chest Pains), all furniture personas or all guttural names like Grobbix and Skarrow, which makes the colony feel like one species.
Frequently asked questions
What do you name a pet mimic in D&D?
Most players go with something small and fond that contrasts with the creature: Chester, Boxy, Nibbles, Clasp, Biscuit or a pun like Sir Chompsalot. Pick one you can say quickly at the table, and consider naming it after the object it first appeared as, since that is usually how the party met it.
Do mimics have names in official D&D lore?
Standard mimics are treated as unintelligent ambush predators and have no personal names in the Monster Manual, though older editions describe smarter mimics that can speak and bargain, and several published adventures feature named mimics. Talking mimics are the ones most worth naming; a mute one can be named by the party instead.
What makes a good name for a boss mimic or house mimic?
Use a title rather than a pet name: The Gilded Gullet, Maw of the Vault, Keeper of False Gold or a proper name with an epithet like Ulwen the Ever-Tempting. Large mimics that have swallowed a whole room or building suit names that hint at scale and patience, such as The Waiting Wardrobe or The Stalking Strongroom.
Can I use these names outside D&D?
Yes. Mimics appear in Pathfinder, Baldur's Gate, Terraria, Dark Souls, Enter the Gungeon and countless roguelikes, and the names here are system-neutral. They also work for mimic-style creatures in original fiction, for a shapeshifting chest NPC in a video game or for a plush mimic that needs a tag.
