Shapeshifter Name Generator

Shapeshifter names come from two very different traditions, and the best lists draw on both. The first is mythology: Proteus and Nereus, the Greek sea gods who slipped through forms to avoid answering questions; Loki, who became a mare, a salmon, and an old woman; the Welsh Ceridwen and Gwion Bach chasing each other as hare, greyhound, hen, and grain; selkies who shed sealskins on Scottish shores; the Japanese kitsune Tamamo-no-Mae; and Mesoamerican nahuales. Borrowing one of these names instantly signals a character who is not what they seem.

The second tradition is invented naming, and it works differently. Shapeshifter characters in fiction rarely announce themselves, so writers give them names that only sound wrong on a second reading: a surname like Fetch (an old word for a double), Molt, Slough, Guise, or Turncloak; a first name that is oddly plain, like Wren or Kit; or an epithet such as Manyfaces or Ninefold that the character earns after the reveal.

When picking from this list, decide whether the shapeshifting is a secret or a public identity. A hidden shifter needs a normal name with a subtle tell; a known one, like a druid or skinwalker feared by the village, can carry a bold epithet.
