About d&d shop names
Shop names in D&D follow the same logic as shop names in a medieval town: most are named for the owner (Bertram & Daughters, Old Maud's Remedies), for a painted sign that illiterate customers could recognise (The Bent Nail, The Copper Kettle), or for the trade itself (Barrelbottom Cooperage, Whittle & Wax). The Forgotten Realms adds a few famous models to copy: Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue is Faerûn's mail-order emporium, Waterdeep's Trollskull Alley and the Yawning Portal are surrounded by tiny specialists, and Halaster's Hand-Me-Downs shows how a magic shop can be a joke and a warning at once.
A good D&D shop name tells players what is sold before they walk in. Anvil, Forge, Steel and Ironworks mean weapons and armour; Remedies, Poultices, Tinctures and Apothecary mean potions and healing; Tomes, Quill, Scriveners and Bookbinders mean scrolls and lore; Curiosities, Oddities and Hoard mean the shop where the DM hides the plot hook. Adding a proprietor name (Grimtooth's, Peabody's) makes an NPC out of the sign, and a hint of humour (The Blind Beholder, Nightshade Poisons (Discreet)) makes the place memorable.
Avoid naming every store after a colour and an animal; one Gilded Griffin per town is plenty. Mix trade names, owner names and sign names so the market street sounds like a real one.
Tips for choosing a name
- Signal the trade in the name (Forge, Apothecary, Fletchery, Chandlery) so players do not have to ask what the shop sells.
- Name at least a few shops after their owners; it hands you an NPC name and personality for free.
- Use one whimsical or in-joke shop per town (The Blind Beholder, Halaster's Hand-Me-Downs) and keep the rest plain, so the odd one stands out.
- Magic shops should be rare and slightly ominous; a name like The Rune and Reagent or The Weeping Willow Wands sells the mystery better than Magic Emporium.
- For a specific city, borrow a local landmark (Trollskull Alley Sundries, Yawning Portal Provisioners) to root the shop in your map.
Frequently asked questions
How are shops named in the Forgotten Realms?
Mostly after owners and sign-boards, just like medieval Europe: Aurora's Whole Realms Catalogue, the Old Xoblob Shop, Halaster's Hand-Me-Downs and countless establishments called The Something-and-Something. Trade words like Smithy, Sundries and Provisioner appear often.
What kinds of shops should a D&D town have?
At minimum a general store, a blacksmith, an apothecary or herbalist and an inn. Larger towns add fletchers, tailors, chandlers, bookbinders, jewellers, moneylenders and, rarely, a magic item dealer or spell-component shop.
Should magic shops exist in my 5e campaign?
The Dungeon Master's Guide treats magic items as rare, so many DMs limit magic shops to large cities or make them mysterious one-off encounters. A curiosity shop that sells one enchanted item among the junk keeps magic special.
Can I use these shop names in a published module?
Yes, they are free for personal and commercial use. Avoid Forgotten Realms references such as Aurora's, Trollskull Alley or the Yawning Portal in commercial work, since those belong to Wizards of the Coast.
