About fantasy military names
Fantasy military names do their best work when they tell you how a unit came to be. Real armies name regiments after a number and a place (the 23rd Foot, the Greyhollow Rangers), after a patron (the King's Own Dragoons, Dame Ysolde's Lancers) or after a nickname earned in a campaign (the Muddy Dozen, the Unlucky Thirteenth). Knightly and religious orders use "Order of" plus a relic or vow: the Silver Lance, the Broken Chain, the Last Ember. Mercenaries name themselves after money or their captain, which is why Coin and Blade Company or Harrow's Hundred sound right and Order of the Golden Sunrise Warriors does not.
The weapon or role in the name sets the unit type instantly: Lancers, Dragoons and Hussars are cavalry; Foot, Pikes, Halberdiers and Shieldwall are heavy infantry; Longbows, Crossbows, Rangers and Skirmishers are light troops; Sappers, Engineers and Siege Train are the people who knock down walls; Battlemage Cadre or Warcaster Corps adds magic in a way that still feels like an army. Race and culture can be carried by sound rather than labels: Khazdum Ironbreakers is clearly dwarven, Sylvanthir Bladesingers elven, Gorthak's Skullbreakers orcish. Mix these registers within one army so that a royal guard, a provincial levy and a hired free company read differently on the same battlefield.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give a unit both a formal title and a nickname: "Thirty-First Foot, the Gravediggers." The formal name goes on the muster roll, the nickname is what soldiers and enemies actually say.
- Match the name to the troop type. A unit called Lancers should be cavalry, Halberdiers heavy foot, Rangers or Skirmishers light troops; readers familiar with wargames will notice if the name and role disagree.
- Use the name to imply history: Order of the Broken Chain suggests freed slaves, the Penal Legion of Vass suggests convicts, Refugee Levy of Saltmarch suggests a fallen town. Let the name raise a question the story can answer.
- Vary the naming conventions across factions. A tidy empire numbers its cohorts; a feudal kingdom names units after lords; tribes and hordes name them after chiefs and beasts. That contrast makes an order of battle feel like real politics.
- Keep elite or secret units short and quiet: Emberguard, Wraithguard, the Unbowed, the Quiet Banner. Long heraldic titles belong to parade-ground regiments, not the people who climb walls at night.
Frequently asked questions
What kinds of fantasy military names does this generator include?
Numbered regiments with nicknames, named legions and cohorts, knightly and religious orders, royal and household guards, mercenary free companies, ranger and scout corps, siege and engineer units, battlemage cadres, naval and airborne units, and race-flavored dwarven, elven, orcish and halfling formations. It also includes militias, levies and irregulars for the less glamorous parts of an army.
How do I name a whole army rather than one unit?
Name the army after its ruler, purpose or banner (the Host of the Ivory Throne, the Sunward Fleet, the Grand Army of Mirovar) and then fill it with units from this list that use different conventions: a household guard, a few numbered line regiments, a knightly order, some hired free companies and a provincial levy. The variety is what makes it feel real.
Can I use these names in D&D or other tabletop games?
Yes. They work as factions for a campaign, as the employer or enemy of an adventuring party, as the unit a fighter or paladin character served in, or as opposing forces in mass-combat rules. Units like Nightglass Infiltrators or Witchfinder Company also make good antagonist organizations on their own.
Why do some names have numbers and others do not?
Numbers imply a bureaucratic, standing army that has raised many units over time, like the Roman legions or Napoleonic line regiments. Names without numbers suggest feudal, tribal or religious forces where each unit is unique. Mixing both in one setting is a quick way to show which cultures are centralized and which are not.
