Special Forces Name Generator

Real special forces names are surprisingly plain. The British SAS is simply the Special Air Service, and its operators call it "the Regiment". America's Delta Force is officially 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, nicknamed "the Unit", and DEVGRU is the Naval Special Warfare Development Group. Elsewhere you find numbers and colours rather than adjectives: Russia's Alpha and Vympel groups, Israel's Sayeret Matkal and Unit 269, South Korea's 707th, Poland's GROM (thunder), France's Commando Hubert, and Germany's KSK. The mystique comes from what the units do, not from the words in their names.

The naming pattern is a bureaucratic wrapper (Detachment, Squadron, Troop, Group, Task Force, Unit plus a number) around a short identifier, which is often a colour, a letter, a bird, or a founder's name. Fiction usually keeps that structure and adds a little colour: Call of Duty's Task Force 141, Rainbow Six's Rainbow, Metal Gear's FOXHOUND, and Ghost Recon's Ghosts all sound like they could exist. Inside a unit, sub-teams use short callsigns like Bravo Two Zero, Sunray, or Kilo Team.

Use the formal designations when a general or journalist is speaking, the nickname ("the Regiment", "Night Stalkers") when operators speak, and the callsigns when they are on the radio. Our list covers all three layers.
