Fantasy Place Name Generator
Towns, ruins, forests and realms for your fantasy map
Generate fantasy place names for every point on your map: villages and cities, castles and ruins, forests, mountains, lakes, coasts and whole regions, in English-compound, Celtic, Norse and invented-language styles.
About fantasy place names
Fantasy place names work when they follow the logic of real ones. Most English place names are a descriptive root plus a settlement or landform word: -wick (farm), -holt (wood), -mere (lake), -fen, -moor, -ford, -bury, -thwaite. Thornwick, Ashenmoor and Brackenholt sound instantly believable because they obey rules your reader already knows from Yorkshire and Wessex. Celtic prefixes do the same job from the front: Caer (fort), Dun (hill fort), Inis (island), Tor (crag) and Cwm (valley) give Caer Dunhollow or Inis Cuilenn an older, western feel. Norse -holm, -garde, -by and -beck work for cold or coastal regions.
For distant or non-human lands, drop the English morphology entirely. Flowing vowels and soft consonants (Ondolasse, Thalorien, Lorethil) read as elven or ancient; clustered hard consonants and apostrophes (Zhar-Kethul, Brakkar's Maw, Vorthax Crater) read as orcish, demonic or simply hostile terrain. Possessives and event names (Haldane's Rest, Kingsfall, The Sundered Bridge) imply history, which is the cheapest worldbuilding there is. A handful of evocative descriptive names (The Drowned Cathedral, The Weeping Steppe) belong on any map, but more than a few makes the world feel like a theme park.
This list mixes all of those registers so you can pick a consistent palette per region and keep the styles distinct across your map.
How to choose fantasy place names
- Give each region of your map one naming language: English compounds in the heartland, Celtic prefixes in the west, harsh consonants across the border. Readers will feel the frontier without being told.
- Use settlement suffixes honestly: -wick, -ham and -thorpe for villages, -bury, -burg and -gate for walled towns, -hold, -keep and Caer for fortresses, -mere, -fen and -moor for natural features.
- Let a few names carry history: a possessive (Orrin's Leap), an event (Kingsfall) or a ruin (Old Carrow, Tumbledown Keep) tells the reader something happened there.
- Say the name aloud in a sentence of dialogue. If your characters would shorten it, shorten it first; real people say Oxford, not Oxenford Minster.
- Ration the dramatic names. One Drowned Cathedral per map is memorable; ten makes the melodrama cheap.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make fantasy place names sound realistic?
Copy the structure of real place names: a short descriptive root (ash, thorn, black, cold) plus a landform or settlement word (-wick, -mere, -ford, -holt). Keep one morphology per region, and let the oldest or most important places have the shortest, most worn-down names.
What is the difference between names for towns, castles and natural features?
Settlement suffixes (-wick, -bury, -ton, -ham, -thorpe) mark towns and villages; -hold, -keep, Caer and Castle mark fortresses; -mere, -fen, -moor, -fell, -wood and -tarn mark lakes, marshes, moors, hills, forests and mountain pools. Using them correctly is an easy way to make a map feel researched.
Can I use these names for a D&D campaign or a published novel?
Yes. All of the names here are original or built from public-domain place-name elements; none are taken from a copyrighted setting. Check that a name you choose is not also a major location in a franchise your readers know before making it central to your story.
How many different naming styles should one fantasy world have?
Usually two to four. One for the core human kingdoms, one for older or non-human peoples, and one for a rival or hostile culture is plenty; more than that and readers lose track of where they are.
