Village and town names for halflings and hobbit-like small folk: burrow and hill names like Tuckaway Hill and Snughole, river villages like Mugwort-on-the-Water, larder names like Seedcake Row and Kettle-on-the-Hob, family seats like Tuckwell's Rest, market towns, river caravans and nomad camps. For D&D maps, cozy fantasy and one-shot adventures.

About halfling village names

Halfling villages are named by people who care most about a dry hole, a full pantry and whoever lives next door, and the names show it. They follow the English countryside habit of joining two plain words, but the words come from the burrow and the kitchen: Snughole, Underloaf, Cosyburrow, Larderfield, Seedcake Row. A hill is a home here, so hill names are house names too, as in Tuckaway Hill, Greendoor Hill and Forty Chimneys.

The list covers every kind of halfling settlement: burrow and hill names, river and mill villages, farm and orchard hamlets, food, ale and larder names, family seats, market towns and fairgrounds, river caravans, nomad camps and gentle joke names for a one-shot, such as Much Munching and Room-for-Pudding. The family seats use English-style surnames, some real and some coined.

Nine entries are J.R.R. Tolkien's own place names from his hobbit country, kept as style anchors: Hobbiton, Michel Delving, Frogmorton, Tuckborough, Crickhollow, Bucklebury, Overhill, Needlehole and Nobottle. The word smial, used in four names, is also his. From Dungeons & Dragons come Gatherhold and Beluir, halfling settlements of Eberron and the Forgotten Realms, and the halfling gods in Yondalla's Hearth and Arvoreen's Watch. This site has no tie to either.

How to choose halfling village names

  • Decide what the village is proud of and name it for that: a mill, an orchard, a prize marrow or one very old family. Halfling names brag about comfort, never about battles.
  • Use Little, Much, Nether, Upper and Lower to make neighbors. Upper Crust and Lower Crust, or Much Burrowing and Nether Burrowing, give a map two villages and a rivalry for the price of one idea.
  • Keep the joke names for one-shots and side quests. A campaign hub the party visits for months wears better as Tuckaway Hill than as Loosen-Your-Belt.
  • For wandering lightfoot bands and river folk, name the camp after the journey and the cooking: The Long Picnic, Moveable Feast, Nine Barges.
  • Say the name with 'the road to' in front of it. If it sounds like a place a farmer would give directions to, it fits.

Frequently asked questions

What do halfling village names sound like?

Like English country villages seen from a kitchen window. Two homely words are joined, usually about a hole or hill, food, a garden or a family: Hearthhole, Breadloaf Hill, Pippin Orchard, Butterby Hall. There are no grim or grand words, because halflings do not name a home after a battle.

Are these names from The Lord of the Rings?

Nine are Tolkien's own place names, listed in the guide above, and the word smial in four names is his as well. The rest are written in the same English-village spirit for your own maps. This site is not affiliated with the Tolkien Estate or with Wizards of the Coast.

What is a good name for a D&D halfling village?

For a settled stout community, try a hill or family seat name such as Stoutbarrow, Tuckaway Hill or Warmhearth Hall. For lightfoot wanderers, pick a caravan or camp name like Lightfoots' Landing, Nine Barges or Pot-and-Pony. Gatherhold and Beluir on the list are existing D&D settlements, so use those only if you play in Eberron or the Forgotten Realms.

How do I name a halfling town instead of a village?

Add a market word. Market Mugworthy, Chipping Crumb, Buttermarket and Butter Cross all say that farmers from smaller villages come here to trade. Chipping is an old English word for a market, which is why it appears in real town names.
