Generate Greek names for dogs, most with a short meaning: everyday words like Asteri (star), Meli (honey) and Lykos (wolf), foods like Feta and Tzatziki, islands like Santorini, gods and heroes, and dog names from ancient Greece such as Argos, Laelaps and the hound names Xenophon recommended.

About Greek dog names

Every entry here is a real Greek word, name or place, and most carry a short English meaning in parentheses. The biggest group is everyday modern Greek: Asteri (star), Meli (honey), Lykos (wolf), Arkouda (bear), Volta (stroll). Modern words are spelled letter for letter, with ch for the letter chi and y for upsilon. Gods and heroes keep their familiar English spellings, in the Greek form, not the Roman: Zeus, not Jupiter.

Around that core sit food names such as Feta, Tzatziki and Loukoumas, islands and cities from Santorini to Sparta, the letters from Alpha to Omega, pet forms like Mitsos and endearments like Moro Mou. One group belongs to dogs alone. Argos is the dog that knew Odysseus after twenty years away, Peritas was the dog of Alexander the Great, and Melampus and Theron run in the pack of Actaeon as Ovid names it. Entries marked 'from Xenophon's list' are hound names that Xenophon recommended in his handbook on hunting, where he advises short names that are easy to call.

Greek has grammatical gender. Adjectives ending in -os are masculine and their forms in -i or -a are feminine, so Xanthos and Ataktos suit a boy, Xanthi and Atakti a girl. The endings -aki, -oula and -itsa make a word small and fond: Skylaki, Asproula, Kouklitsa.

How to choose Greek dog names

  • Follow Xenophon and keep it short. His hound names Psyche, Phylax, Horme and Bia are two syllables each, and modern words such as Meli, Lykos and Fos carry just as well across a park.
  • Match the ending to your dog if the grammar matters to you. Chazoulis, Pachoulos and Mikroulis are masculine forms, while Chazoula, Pachoula and Mikroula are feminine. Neuter words such as Asteri, Meli and Skylaki suit any dog.
  • Let the coat choose the word: Mavros (black), Aspros (white), Xanthos (blond), Kanela (cinnamon), Stiktos (spotted) or Malliaros (shaggy).
  • Say ch the Greek way before you commit. In Chara and Chalvas it is the throaty sound of 'loch', in Chioni a softer sound like the h of 'huge', and never the ch of 'chair'.
  • If Greek is spoken at home, think twice about Ela (come) and Pame (let's go). They are everyday commands, so a dog with that name will hear it all day long.

Frequently asked questions

What are cool Greek names for dogs?

Look for a strong sound with a meaning to match: Keravnos (thunderbolt), Lykos (wolf), Aetos (eagle), Atromitos (fearless) or Thrylos (legend). For something older, Argos, Laelaps and Phylax are dog names from ancient Greek myth and writing. All 1,000 entries are real Greek words, names or places.

What are cool Greek god names for dogs?

The list holds more than 80 gods, goddesses, heroes and creatures in their Greek forms, each god with a note on what he or she ruled. Beyond Zeus, Apollo and Athena, try Hecate, whose animal was the dog, Artemis, the huntress shown with her hounds, Boreas, Nyx, Atalanta or Orion.

Did the ancient Greeks name their dogs?

Yes. Xenophon lists short names for hounds in his handbook on hunting, and 40 of them are here, marked 'from Xenophon's list': Psyche (spirit), Phylax (guardian) and Horme (rush, drive) among them. Homer gives Odysseus the dog Argos, and Plutarch reports that Alexander the Great named a city after his dog Peritas.

Is the meaning in parentheses part of the name?

No. The part in parentheses is a translation or a note to help you choose, so the name is Asteri, not the whole entry 'Asteri (star)'. Places such as Santorini and Mykonos and well-known foods such as Feta and Baklava are listed without one.
