Generate names for a pet centipede or millipede, or for the giant many-legged thing at the end of a tunnel in a game or story. The 1,000 names run from leg-count jokes and shoe puns (Legs Eleven, Odd Sock, Caboose) to real genus names and boss titles (Scolopendra, Omukade, Tunnel King).

About centipede names

Centipedes and millipedes look alike in a photo and behave like opposites, and their names follow. A centipede has one pair of legs on each segment, hunts at night and moves faster than most people expect, so it gets speed names such as Blur, Hotfoot and Lickety-Split. A millipede has two pairs on most segments, eats leaf litter and curls into a coil when disturbed, which is where Trundle, Dozer, Amble and Pinwheel come from.

The oldest joke is the leg count, and it is wrong in a useful way. Centipedes always have an odd number of leg pairs, so none has exactly a hundred legs, and the first millipede known to pass a thousand was only described in 2021. That gives Legs Eleven, Give or Take and Never Exactly 100, followed by the shoe and sock names, the train and conga-line names, and armor words like Rivet and Tergite.

For something larger, the list holds real genus names (Scolopendra, Lithobius, Narceus, Illacme), words for the animal in other languages, among them the Japanese mukade, written with the characters for hundred and legs, and the Omukade of Japanese folklore, the giant centipede of Mount Mikami. Boss titles such as Tunnel King and The Endless Column close the set.

How to choose centipede names

  • Match the name to the animal. A centipede is a fast night hunter, so Blur, Quickfoot or Night Shift fits; a millipede is slow and gentle, so try Trundle, Mosey or Easy Does It.
  • Use what the species looks like. Keepers already call their animals by color and pattern, and Redhead, Cherry Red, Blue Ring, Feather Tail and Smoky Oak all double as names.
  • Let the leg count be wrong on purpose. Forty-Two, Ninety-Nine and Thousand-ish are funnier than a correct number, and no centipede has exactly a hundred legs anyway.
  • For a boss or a villain, name the place it rules. Tunnel King, Lord of the Leaf Litter and Queen Under the Log tell players where the fight happens before it starts.
  • Shorten the Latin for a pet. Scolo, Litho and Spiro are the kind of genus shorthand other keepers recognize at once.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a pet centipede?

Speed and night names suit them best: Blur, Hotfoot, Sprint, Night Shift and Bathtub Bandit are all in the list, along with color names such as Redhead and Tiger Stripe. Centipedes are venomous and are not handled, which is the joke behind Look Don't Touch and Tongs Only.

What are good names for a pet millipede?

Slow, round and gentle names fit a millipede: Trundle, Dozer, Amble, Dawdle and Sunday Stroll, or curl names like Pinwheel and Fiddlehead. Shongololo, a southern African word for millipede, comes from a Nguni verb meaning to roll up.

Do centipedes really have 100 legs?

No. Centipedes have an odd number of leg pairs, from 15 pairs in a house centipede to 191 pairs in the longest soil species, so the total is never exactly a hundred. Millipedes do not reach a thousand either, with one known exception: Eumillipes persephone, described in 2021, has up to 1,306 legs, which is why Thirteen Oh Six and Eumillipes are in the list.

What is the Omukade?

The Omukade is the giant centipede of Japanese folklore. In the best known tale it lived on Mount Mikami near Lake Biwa, coiled around the mountain seven and a half times, until the hero Tawara Toda shot it at the request of the Dragon King. The list borrows Omukade, Mikami, Seta and Seven-and-a-Half Coils from that story.
