Pegasus Name Generator

Pegasus was a single named horse before he became a species. Born from the neck of Medusa when Perseus struck off her head, he struck the ground with his hoof to create the Hippocrene spring on Mount Helikon, carried Bellerophon against the Chimera, and was finally set among the stars by Zeus. His name probably comes from pege, "spring", which is why so many good winged-horse names still point to water, sky and light. Greek myth supplies plenty of other divine steeds too: Arion the swift horse of Adrastus, Aethon and Phlegon who drew the chariot of the Sun, Balius and Xanthus the immortal horses of Achilles, and Podarge the storm-footed harpy who mothered them.

A convincing pegasus name usually does one of three things. It borrows directly from Greek (Aella "whirlwind", Zephyros the west wind, Nephele "cloud", Chryse "golden"), it takes a star or constellation name (Altair, Vega, Markab and Enif are actual stars in the constellation Pegasus), or it uses the English compound style familiar from fantasy fiction and My Little Pony, where a sky word meets a horse word: Cloudmane, Stormcrest, Silverhoof.

Horse-word roots are worth knowing because the Greeks used them constantly: hippos means horse, so Leukippe is "white horse", Melanippe "black horse", Chrysippe "golden horse" and Xanthippe "bay horse", all real names from myth and history that fit a mount perfectly.
