About grippli names
Grippli are the small, shy, tree-dwelling frog-folk who first hopped into AD&D's Monster Manual II in 1983 and found their fullest treatment as a playable ancestry in Pathfinder, where they live in the rainforests and swamps of the Mwangi Expanse. Pathfinder's sample names set the tone: Kreetah, Glick, Merrep, Treeto, Dreeta, Wuzzy, Zruuk. Those are tree-frog sounds rather than bullfrog sounds, so a grippli name should peep and click instead of croak. Long ee and oo vowels, light k, t and p consonants, doubled letters and endings in -ik, -ep, -et or -ah all read as grippli; anything built on deep gl-, gr- and ub- belongs to a grung or bullywug instead.
Grippli society is tribal, quiet and matriarchal in most lore, organized around elders, hunters with poisoned darts and a strong attachment to a particular stretch of canopy. That gives you the second half of a name: a descriptive byname from the treetops (Leafcling, Dewback, Vinehand), a tribe marker tied to a landmark (of the Mist Pools, of the Hollow Log) or a deed name earned over a lifetime (Who Caught the Heron). Pathfinder's grippli heritages, Poisonhide, Snaptongue, Stickytoe and Windweb, also work as bynames.
Names here are kept short enough to chirp twice quickly, which is how a grippli would actually say them.
Tips for choosing a name
- Keep it high and light. Say the name in a head voice; if it sounds like a croak, swap a u or o for ee (Zruuk is about as deep as grippli names go).
- Add a canopy byname only for named NPCs. Most grippli go by one chirp; elders, hunters and heroes earn a second word like Dewback, Longtongue or Raincatcher.
- Tie tribe names to a landmark in the campaign, so the Mist Pools or the Hollow Log tribe points the party somewhere on the map.
- Use deed names for elders. Who Threw the First Dart or Who Outran the Snake says more about a grippli's history than any title.
- Double a syllable for hatchlings and affectionate nicknames (Peep-Peep, Kwee-Kwee) and drop it when the character grows up.
Frequently asked questions
What do grippli names sound like?
Short and chirpy. Pathfinder's published examples are Kreetah, Glick, Merrep, Treeto, Dreeta, Wuzzy and Zruuk, and the pattern is long ee or oo vowels with light clicks (k, t, p) and endings in -ik, -ep, -et or -ah. They are noticeably higher and quicker than bullywug or grung names.
How are grippli different from grung and bullywugs?
All three are frog-folk, but grippli are the small, peaceful tree-dwellers; grung are the brightly colored, caste-obsessed poison frogs; bullywugs are the pompous swamp brutes. The names follow suit: grippli chirp (Peepit, Tchillee), grung croak with rolled Rs (Krrik, Tchak), bullywugs gulp and bellow (Gulpaxe, Krubbash).
Do grippli have last names or tribe names?
No formal surnames in the rules, but most tables give notable grippli a treetop byname (Leafcling, Mossbelly, Dartfinger) or a tribe marker named after a landmark such as the Black Creek or the High Fig. Elders often carry a deed name instead, like Who Caught the Heron.
Can I use these names in 5e or other systems?
Yes. Grippli appear in D&D going back to AD&D's Monster Manual II and in several third-party 5e bestiaries, and the names are system-neutral. They also work for any small, arboreal frog or toad character in fiction, or as nicknames for pet tree frogs.
