Generate bullywug names for D&D and other swamp-dwelling frog-folk: short croaking names like Gulpaxe and Krubbash, full names with boggy surnames, self-important court titles, and tribe names for the marsh they rule.
About bullywug names
Bullywugs have hopped through Dungeons & Dragons since the Fiend Folio, and the Monster Manual gives them two defining traits: they live in fetid swamps, and they are absurdly self-important. A bullywug name should carry both. The sound comes from the throat sac, so the convention is short, wet, guttural names built on b, g, k and p with doubled consonants and deep vowels: Gulpaxe, Krubbash, Thubbaluk, Ploosha. A glottal pop in the middle (Ribbok, Skrelk) or a pure croak (Brekekek, Kwok-Kwok) also reads instantly as bullywug.
The vanity comes through in how the name is used. Bullywug society is a parody of a royal court: every muddy pond has its king, every king has a chancellor, a herald and a dozen lords who expect to be addressed by full title. That gives you two extra layers to play with, a swampy surname (Mudthroat, Reedback, Fensquat) and an inflated honorific or deed name (Lord Plubbek of the Soggy Throne, Blubbek the Unblinking, Nibbla Who Swallowed a Hook), which is often far grander than the creature deserves.
This generator mixes plain croaking names, full names, titled courtiers and tribe names such as the Sunken Log Tribe or the Lily Court, so a DM can populate a whole marsh in one roll. They work just as well for Pathfinder boggards.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the name to the bullywug's rank. Common warriors get a bare croak (Skubb, Vrogg); anyone with a throne, even a log, gets a title and a domain, and insists on hearing the whole thing.
- Say it with the throat sac. If the name cannot be delivered as a low, wet croak at the table, shorten it or add a doubled b or g until it can.
- Use the epithet for comedy or menace. 'Who Caught the Heron' tells the party this bullywug is the tribe's hero; 'the Twice-Crowned' hints at a coup they can exploit.
- Name the tribe after its water. Bullywug bands identify with a specific pond, sinkhole or stretch of reeds, so Eelwater Spawn or Rot Hollow Warband tells players exactly where they are.
- Keep surnames swamp-specific rather than generically evil. Mosses, reeds, eels, leeches, lilies and mud feel more authentic than skulls and shadows.
Frequently asked questions
What do bullywug names sound like in D&D?
There is no official list in the Monster Manual, so the common convention is croak-like names built on hard b, g, k and p sounds with doubled consonants and low vowels, such as Gulpaxe, Krubbash, Blorguth and Ploosha. Bullywugs are also obsessed with rank, so leaders usually carry grand titles like King, Lord, Chancellor or Great Croaker.
Do bullywugs have last names?
Not in the rules, but many DMs give notable bullywugs a descriptive surname tied to the swamp (Mudthroat, Reedback, Wartlip) or a deed name (Who Ate the Eel). Rank-and-file bullywugs usually go by a single croak, while courtiers stack on as many titles as they can get away with.
Can I use these names for Pathfinder boggards or other frog-folk?
Yes. Boggards are Pathfinder's equivalent swamp frog-folk and share the same guttural, croaking feel. The names also suit homebrew frog races, Grippli or grung NPCs with a coarser accent, and any amphibian villain or sidekick in fantasy fiction.
How should I name a bullywug king or court?
Go big. Bullywug rulers demand flattery, so pair a short croak with an overblown title and a domain, for example Margrave Krogg of Stinkmere or Lord Plubbek of the Soggy Throne, and give the court a name such as the Lily Court or Frogmarrow Court. The gap between the grand name and the muddy reality is the joke.
