Generate tortle names that match D&D 5e's own examples from The Tortle Package and Chult: short, warm, vowel-rich names like Baka, Kinlek, Ubo and Xelbuk, plus optional epithets and clan-style bynames. Made for 5e characters, Saltmarsh coastal campaigns and cozy fantasy fiction.

About tortle names

Tortles entered D&D 5e through The Tortle Package and Tomb of Annihilation, and both sources give the same short list of example names: Baka, Damu, Gar, Gura, Ini, Jappa, Kinlek, Krull, Lim, Lop, Nortle, Nulka, Olo, Ploqwat, Quee, Queg, Quott, Sunny, Tibor, Ubo, Uhok, Wabu, Xelbuk, Xopa and Yog. Every one of those is one or two syllables, most end in a vowel, and they lean on soft b, k, l, and u sounds. That is the tortle sound: unhurried, friendly and easy to say, with a hint of the Chultan and island cultures the tortles live alongside.

Tortles do not use surnames. They are hatched, raised for about a year, and then their parents die and the young set out alone, so there is no clan structure to hand down a family name. What tortles do accumulate is experience, and a name often gains a byname over a long life: an epithet for a trait (the Patient, Who Waits), a place they came from (of Snout of Omgar, of Saltmarsh), a count of years wandered (Twelve-Springs) or a craft (Netweaver, Shellmender). Those bynames are entirely optional flavour and are how a Dungeon Master can make an old tortle NPC feel different from a young one.

Gender is not encoded in tortle names, though many players lean toward the -a and -i endings for female characters and harder single syllables like Grum or Tugg for gruff males. Either way, keep them short.

Tips for choosing a name

  • One or two syllables is the rule; if a name is longer than Ploqwat, it is probably not a tortle name.
  • Tortles have no family names, so instead of a surname give an older character an epithet or a place, e.g. Kinlek of the Mistcliffs.
  • Bynames that count years wandered (Nine-Tides, Fourteen-Winters) instantly signal how experienced a tortle NPC is.
  • For a monk or druid tortle, a calm epithet like the Patient or the Steady leans into the race's stereotype; a rogue or fighter can play against it with Crabcatcher or Stormrider.
  • Any name here works for any gender; pick by sound rather than by a rule.

Frequently asked questions

What are the official tortle names in D&D 5e?

The Tortle Package and Tomb of Annihilation list Baka, Damu, Gar, Gura, Ini, Jappa, Kinlek, Krull, Lim, Lop, Nortle, Nulka, Olo, Ploqwat, Quee, Queg, Quott, Sunny, Tibor, Ubo, Uhok, Wabu, Xelbuk, Xopa and Yog. Names in this generator follow the same pattern.

Do tortles have last names?

No. Tortle parents die shortly after their young hatch, so there are no family lines to pass a surname down. Older tortles sometimes pick up an epithet, a home-place byname or a count of years wandered instead.

Are tortle names gendered?

The official examples are not divided by gender, and tortle culture does not treat names that way. Players often use vowel-ending names for female characters and blunt single syllables for males, but any name here suits any character.

Can I use these names in a published adventure or stream?

Yes. Aside from the official examples, every name here is original and free to use in homebrew, third-party publications and actual plays. Tortles and D&D are properties of Wizards of the Coast.
