Phoenix Name Generator

The phoenix as we know it comes to us through Herodotus, who describes a sacred bird from Arabia that appears in Heliopolis once every five hundred years, and the Roman poets who added the funeral pyre and the rebirth from ash. But almost every culture has a firebird: the Egyptian Bennu, a heron linked to the sun god Ra and the flooding of the Nile; the Persian Simurgh and Huma, whose shadow crowned kings; the Chinese Fenghuang, an emblem of empresses and harmony; the Slavic Zhar-ptitsa whose glowing feather starts so many fairy tales; and the Japanese Suzaku, vermilion guardian of the south. Beyond the myths, the richest source of phoenix names is vocabulary for fire, sun and dawn across languages. Ignis (Latin), Pyr (Greek), Agni (Sanskrit), Atash and Azar (Persian), Aithne and Aidan (Irish, "little fire"), Fiamma (Italian) and Brand (Old Norse, "firebrand") all sound like names already. The rebirth theme adds a second layer: Anastasia and Anastasios mean "resurrection", Renatus and Renée mean "born again", and Resurgam is the Latin motto "I shall rise again".
