Sphinx Name Generator

There are really two sphinxes. The Egyptian sphinx is a benevolent lion-bodied guardian with a king's head; the Great Sphinx of Giza was called Horemakhet ('Horus in the Horizon'), Shesep-ankh ('living image'), and by later Arabic speakers Abu al-Hawl ('father of dread'). Egyptian sphinx names therefore look like royal throne names: a god's name plus a virtue, joined into forms like Usermaatre, Menkheperre, or Nefermaat. The Greek sphinx is the opposite: a single female monster, daughter of Echidna, sometimes called Phix, who strangled anyone at Thebes who failed her riddle until Oedipus answered it. Greek sphinx names lean on words for riddle and questioning: ainigma, griphos, zetema, aporia.

Good sphinx names carry that split. For a guardian sphinx, use Egyptian throne-name structure or an epithet built around horizon, sun, and gate (the Keeper of the Two Horizons, the Sun's Doorwarden). For a riddling sphinx, use Greek roots or a title that promises a test (the Silent Questioner, the Strangler of Fools). D&D and Pathfinder split the creature into androsphinx, gynosphinx, criosphinx, and hieracosphinx, and any of these names fits those stat blocks.
