Generate gremlin names with the right spiky, gibbering energy: short snarly names like Snik and Krix, saboteur compounds like Wrenchwhisker and Fuselick, grubby nicknames, Fifinella-style female gremlins, and the classic movie and WWII-folklore gremlins.

About gremlin names

Gremlins started as Royal Air Force folklore in the 1920s and 30s: invisible little creatures blamed for every jammed gun, leaking fuel line and mysteriously loosened bolt. Roald Dahl wrote them up in 1943, complete with female gremlins called Fifinellas and children called Widgets, and Joe Dante's 1984 film gave them names like Gizmo, Stripe, Mohawk and Brain. A good gremlin name still carries both halves of that history: it should sound like something small and nasty chattering in the dark, and it should hint at the particular mischief the creature gets up to.

Phonetically, gremlin names lean on hard consonant clusters (sk, kr, gr, tz), short clipped syllables and a lot of z, x and double letters: Snik, Krix, Grubb, Skreep, Zibbit. Longer names work best as compounds that describe the damage or the grime, which is why Wrenchwhisker, Fuselick, Sootgrin and Scabknuckle feel right while anything elegant feels wrong. Onomatopoeia is fair game too; a gremlin called Glitch, Clunk or Kerplunk is perfectly named.

The list below mixes those styles with nickname-plus-epithet forms like Mungo Nine-Fingers and Grubb Two-Teeth for named villains, so you can populate a D&D workshop, a kids' story, a steampunk engine room or a tabletop horde with gremlins that each sound distinct.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Match the name to the mischief: a gremlin that sabotages electronics might be Shortwire or Fuselick, one that haunts a kitchen could be Kettlegrub or Sourmilk, and a pocket-thief is Keysnatch or Filch.
  • Keep it short for swarms and long for individuals: give nameless hordes one-syllable names like Snik, Pogg and Nakk, and save compounds and epithets like Grizzlewick the Fuse-Eater for a boss or recurring pest.
  • Say the name aloud; a real gremlin name should be slightly unpleasant to pronounce, with spit-flecked consonants, and should sound nothing like a fairy or pixie name.
  • For a kids' story, lean on the silly end of the list (Wobblekin, Butterfingers, Hiccup Harry); for horror, use the grubby compounds (Mangeclaw, Needletooth, Gristlechops).
  • If you want a crowd of gremlins to read as one family or nest, share a single sound or root between them, such as Gremlo, Gremlix and Gremlug, without making every name identical.

Frequently asked questions

What are the gremlins in the Gremlins movies called?

The mogwai hero is Gizmo; the main villains are Stripe in the first film and Mohawk in Gremlins 2, alongside Brain (the intelligent gremlin), Daffy, George, Lenny and Greta, the female gremlin. Earl is a minor named gremlin. All of them appear at the top of this list.

What makes a name sound like a gremlin rather than a goblin or an imp?

Gremlins are tied to machinery and sabotage, so their best names reference gears, wires, soot and breakdowns, like Cogsnatch or Backfire. Goblin names tend to be more tribal and fantasy-flavoured, while imp names lean demonic. Keeping the mechanical and mischievous angle is what sells a gremlin.

Are there female gremlin names here?

Yes. In RAF folklore female gremlins are Fifinellas, so the list includes Fifinella and Finella, plus original names such as Widgetina, Spandula, Sprocketta, Grizelda Gasket and Mabel Meddlemitt. Many of the short snarly names like Tizz and Snidge work for any gender.

Can I use these for D&D or other tabletop games?

Absolutely. Gremlins appear in Pathfinder and many homebrew D&D settings as tiny fey or fiends that wreck equipment. Use the one-syllable names for a swarm and the epithet names, like Snaggle the Unscrewer or Krix Underfloor, for a named leader your players will remember.
