Sprites are the smallest and quickest of the fae: the winged, insect-sized creatures of folklore, Shakespeare's Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth, and Mustardseed, Tinker Bell and the pixie tradition, and in D&D the sprite of the Feywild, a tiny fey archer who can sense whether you are good or evil. Sprite names reflect that size and speed. Most are single, short words taken from the smallest things in a hedgerow: seeds, berries, insects, drops of water, and slivers of light.

There are a few recognizable styles. Folk-sprite names like Puck, Hob, and Robin Goodfellow are old English household names for mischievous house spirits. Nature-diminutive names (Thistledown, Cowslip, Sloe, Acorn) suit gentle forest sprites and are the go-to for children's fiction. Motion and light names (Flit, Wink, Glimmer, Wisp) capture the darting quality that makes sprites hard to catch. Sewing-box and trinket names (Thimble, Bobbin, Bauble) come from the tradition of sprites stealing or borrowing tiny human objects. For a fuller name, pair a short first name with a two-part nature surname, as in Tansy Brambleburr or Wisp Glimmerwing.

When choosing, think about the sprite's temperament: a helpful hearth sprite, a prankster, a Feywild archer, and a will-o'-the-wisp all want different sounds.
