Pixies come from the folklore of Cornwall and Devon, where they were called piskies and were blamed for leading travellers astray, tangling horses' manes and dancing on the moors by night. The oldest named pixies are homely and English: Joan the Wad, queen of the Cornish pixies, and her consort Jack o' Lantern, alongside Shakespeare's Puck (Robin Goodfellow) and the fairies of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Peaseblossom, Cobweb, Moth and Mustardseed. That folk tradition explains why the best pixie names sound small, quick and slightly rustic rather than grand and elvish.
