Generate female barbarian names from Norse, Celtic and steppe traditions, with invented Pictish-style and sword-and-sorcery names beside them and earned bynames and totem epithets such as Hervor Grave-Fire, Macha Red-Mane and Hadda Bear-Sister. Built for D&D barbarians, tribal war leaders and fantasy novels.

About female barbarian names

"Barbarian" began as the Greek and Roman word for anyone beyond the frontier, and the women of those peoples left names of their own. Ancient writers recorded Boudica of the Iceni, Cartimandua of the Brigantes, Thusnelda of the Cherusci, the seeress Veleda, and Tomyris, the Massagetae queen who defeats Cyrus the Great in Herodotus. The Norse sagas add women whose bynames are as blunt as any man's, such as Thurid Sound-Filler and Oddny Isle-Candle.

A female barbarian name usually has two parts. The given name is short and feminine in its own language: the endings -hild, -dis, -run and -gerd mark a woman's name in Norse and Germanic tongues, and many Mongolian names are plain words, such as Saran (moon) and Tsetseg (flower). The second part is earned, not inherited. It can be a deed (Chiomara Head-Taker), a look (Macha Red-Mane), a totem animal (Hadda Bear-Sister), a clan (Tyra of the Broken Axe Clan) or a title such as Spear-Mother. The Norse surnames here are matronymics, which name the mother, as in Sunniva Helgudottir.

Almost no Pictish women's names survive, so nearly all the Pictish-flavored entries are invented from the sounds of the king lists. The sword-and-sorcery names follow the pulp tradition that Robert E. Howard started, and they are original, not taken from any book or game.

How to choose female barbarian names

  • Pick the given name by culture first. A Norse or Gothic name suits a northern raider, an Irish or Gaulish one a woad-painted hill tribe, and a Mongolian or Scythian one a horse archer.
  • Let the byname tell one story. A deed, a scar or a totem animal is enough, and Rosamund Skull-Cup says more than three stacked titles would.
  • Say it out loud at the table. If the group cannot pronounce Chlodoswintha after two tries, give her a short use-name and keep the long form for formal scenes.
  • In D&D 5e, a Path of the Totem Warrior (Path of the Wild Heart in the 2024 rules) barbarian can take her byname from her totem spirit, such as the bear, the eagle or the wolf.
  • Earn the byname in play. Start with the given name alone and let the party hand out the epithet after the first memorable fight.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good female barbarian name?

A short given name with hard consonants, followed by a byname that was earned. Hervor Grave-Fire, Macha Red-Mane and Khutulun Ten-Thousand-Horses all work that way: the first word says where she is from and the rest says what she did. Leave courtly titles out, because they belong to knights and nobles.

Are these female barbarian names historical?

Some are. Cartimandua, Thusnelda, Veleda and Tomyris were real women recorded by ancient writers, Mandukhai is known from later Mongolian chronicles, and names such as Medb and Scathach come from Irish legend. Many of the bynames, nearly all of the Pictish-flavored names and all of the sword-and-sorcery names were made up for this list, so look a name up before you treat it as history.

How is this list different from the female Viking names?

The Viking list concentrates on Old Norse names and patronymics. This one also ranges across Gothic, Frankish, Celtic, Pictish-flavored, Scythian, Mongol and Turkic names, and it adds totem epithets, clan names and tribal titles such as Spear-Mother Hulda and Khatun Altan. Its Norse surnames are matronymics, built on the mother's name.

Can I use these names for D&D, Pathfinder or a novel?

Yes. They are meant for player characters, NPCs, the tribes of a homebrew setting and fiction. A few entries are the names of real historical or legendary women, so for a published work it is worth searching a name first to see what it is already tied to.
