Generate gothic city names for vampire fiction, horror campaigns, Gothic-punk settings and dark fantasy maps: fog-bound English boroughs, Carpathian strongholds, German and French towns with a sinister edge, and cathedral districts that sound like they were named by mourners.
About gothic city names
A gothic city name works by sounding old, cold and slightly wrong. The tradition comes from the novels: Otranto, Udolpho and Whitby via Walpole, Radcliffe and Stoker; Innsmouth and Arkham from Lovecraft; Gotham, Ravenholm and Yharnam from comics and games. Nearly all follow real English or Central European place-name grammar, then swap a cheerful element for a bleak one. Take a genuine suffix (-moor, -mere, -wick, -gate, -thorpe, -burg, -stadt, -mont), attach a word for grief, ash, crows, night or stone, and you get Ravensmoor or Nebelstadt instead of Oakmoor or Neustadt.
The best names also imply a story. Possessive names like Harker's Landing or Orlok's Reach suggest a founder people still whisper about; ecclesiastical names such as Chancel Moor, Reliquary Hill or Sanctum Mortis point to a city built around a cathedral or an order; industrial names like Sootbridge and Furnace Gate fit Victorian gothic where the horror is the factory as much as the castle. Romanian, Slavic, Italian and French forms (Vărăsov, Chernograd, Tenebroso, Sombreval) shift the mood from English fog to Carpathian or Mediterranean decay.
The list mixes these registers so you can choose by setting: English-borough gloom for a Whitechapel-style city, Germanic forms for a Castlevania-flavored principality, Latin for a holy city gone dark, and district names like The Sunless Quarter for neighborhoods inside a larger metropolis.
Tips for choosing a name
- Pick one linguistic family per region: a map with Nebelstadt beside Vaudrevel beside Chernograd reads as random, but a cluster of Germanic names around one mountain range reads as history.
- Use the suffix to set the scale. -mere, -moor and -hollow feel like villages and small towns; -gate, -spire, -burg and -stadt feel like walled cities; 'The Ashen Ward' or 'Lower Gallowmere' feel like districts inside a metropolis.
- Pair the dark element with something mundane. Real places are named for rivers, crossings and saints, so Crowsferry or Saint Verenne feels lived-in where Deathdoom Citadel feels like a video-game level.
- Give your city an older name and a newer one (Castellane, later called Mourningvale after the plague) and let characters use them inconsistently; that one trick adds centuries of implied history.
- Say it aloud. Gothic names lean on long vowels and soft consonants (Mourne, Sorrow, Hollow, Veil); too many hard K and X sounds push the name toward sci-fi or orcish.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a city name sound gothic?
Mostly the combination of a real, old-fashioned place-name structure with a bleak image: a genuine English or German suffix attached to words for crows, ash, fog, grief, night or the grave. Long vowels and soft consonants (Mourne, Hollow, Veil) help; so does a hint of religion or decay, as in Chancel Moor or Old Sepulchre.
Are these names good for a vampire or Castlevania-style setting?
Yes. The Germanic, Romanian and Slavic entries (Rabenstein, Vărăsov, Chernograd) suit Transylvanian and Central European vampire fiction, while the English-borough names fit Dracula's London or a Victorian penny-dreadful city. For a Gothic-punk metropolis like Gotham, combine a single stark name with district names such as The Drowned Parish.
Can I use these for D&D, Vampire: The Masquerade or a horror novel?
All of the names are original or built from public-domain place-name elements, so you can use them freely in games, fiction and worldbuilding. A few nod to classic literature (Harker's Landing, Carfax, Usher's Fall); those make good Easter eggs but you may want something less recognizable for a main setting.
How do I name gothic districts inside one large city?
Name the city once with a strong, short name (Blackspire, Nocturne, Vellmoor), then name quarters after what happens there: a cathedral ward, a gasworks, a burial ground, a drowned riverside. Real cities do exactly this, which is why Whitechapel, Gallows Hill and Cripplegate already sound gothic without any help.
