A gothic town name does more than sound spooky. The genre runs on decayed grandeur, so the best names hint at a church, a castle or an old family that has seen better centuries: an abbey or priory in the name, a saint nobody prays to any more, a moor or marsh that isolates the place, a hill that once held a gallows or a cairn. English gothic leans on Old English place elements, moor, mere, wick, fell, thorpe, gate and hollow, combined with words of gloom, ash and mourning, which is how you get Ravensmoor, Thornwick, Sorrowfell and Lychgate.

Continental gothic has its own textures. German-style towns use Nacht, Schatten, Raben, Toten and Finster with -burg, -stein, -feld and -au, while French ones favour Saint- and Sainte- prefixes, Mont-, Ville- and hyphenated river names, and Italian or Spanish towns build on nero, oscura, sombra and penumbra.   • Pair the town with a landmark that justifies the name. Bellmourne should have a bell that tolls for no reason; Lychgate should have a churchyard the road passes through.
  • Use restraint. One overtly morbid name (Gallows Bend) among several quieter ones (Ashcombe, Hollowmere, Greywick) feels more real than a map where every town is a warning.
  • Short single-word names like Knell, Dolour or Tenebrae work well for the central, cursed town, while longer compounds suit the surrounding villages.
  • Check that an invented name is not an actual place if you plan to publish; several gothic-sounding names exist in real Yorkshire, Cornwall or Germany.
