Gargoyle Name Generator

Gargoyle names come from two very different traditions. Disney's Gargoyles set the modern template: gargoyles historically had no names, so the Manhattan clan named themselves after landmarks and neighborhoods (Brooklyn, Broadway, Lexington, Hudson, Bronx) while older gargoyles carried names given by humans (Goliath, Demona) or drawn from local legend (Griff, Una, and Leo of the London clan). Naming a gargoyle after a place, a bridge, or a cathedral is now instantly recognizable and works for any clan that wakes up in a new city.

The older tradition is Gothic and ecclesiastical. Real gargoyles are medieval rain spouts on cathedrals like Notre-Dame, Chartres, and Salisbury, so names built from stonemasonry (Buttress, Keystone, Corbel, Finial), Latin words for stone and watching (Saxum, Custos, Vigilo, Excubitor), and the canonical hours or church music (Vesper, Compline, Requiem, Kyrie) sound like they belong on a stone guardian who has watched a city for six hundred years. Old saints' names such as Anselm, Perpetua, and Aloysius give a similar weight.

For D&D and darker fantasy, gargoyles are elemental monsters, and gravelly, one-syllable names (Kragg, Skarn, Grot, Vhask) with a weathered epithet (Cracktooth, Mossback) fit better than anything pretty.
