About gnome last names

A gnome's last name is a clan name. The fifth edition Player's Handbook gives every gnome a personal name, a clan name and a nickname, and it lists eleven clan names: Beren, Daergel, Folkor, Garrick, Nackle, Murnig, Ningel, Raulnor, Scheppen, Timbers and Turen. Those eleven are in this list as the book's own. The other short names, such as Dorrock, Pellick, Skeppel and Quennor, are new ones written to the same compact pattern, and a handful of plain plurals (Rafters, Shingles, Bobbins) follow Timbers.

Most tables want something more descriptive, so the rest of the list is grouped loosely by kind of gnome. Rock gnomes and tinkers get workshop compounds: Coppertwist, Sprocketspin, Lensgrinder, Tinwhistle. Forest gnomes get burrow and hedgerow names such as Thistlesong, Acornpocket and Owlhoot, with hearth names like Teakettle and Pepperpot for families that stay home. Illusionists and gem cutters get Glimmerfacet and Opalglance, inventors in the World of Warcraft mold get Sparknozzle and Voltwrench, and deep gnomes get quiet stone names: Cobaltvein, Hushtread, Karst.

The last group is gnomish mischief: old words for nonsense and fuss, such as Balderdash, Kerfuffle and Widdershins, worn as family names. Every entry is a surname, so any of them can follow a first name and sit in front of a nickname.

How to choose gnome last names

  • Balance the lengths. Gnome first names in the Player's Handbook run long (Boddynock, Ellyjobell), so a short clan name such as Turen, Arkle or Dunnet keeps the full name sayable. A short first name like Zook can carry Hocuspocusworth.
  • Match the surname to the branch of the family. Workshop names (Rivetknack, Gearfitter) suit rock gnomes and artificers, hedgerow names (Brackenfold, Wrensnest) suit forest gnomes, and stone names (Seamfinder, Slatesplit) suit deep gnomes.
  • Give a whole clan one theme. If the party meets three Pepperpots and a Ladlewell, the table will guess they are cousins before you say so.
  • Use the full gnome order when you want flavor: personal name, clan name, then the nickname in quotes. Alston Coppertwist "Oilcan" tells a story in three words.
  • Read it aloud before you commit. The Player's Handbook says gnomes pick the names that are the most fun to say, which is a fair test for a surname you will repeat all campaign.

Frequently asked questions

Do gnomes have last names in D&D?

Yes. In the fifth edition Player's Handbook a gnome has a personal name, a clan name and a nickname, and the clan name works as the last name. The book lists eleven clan names, from Beren to Turen, and all eleven are in this list alongside new ones in the same style.

What is the difference between a gnome clan name and a gnome family name?

In play there is none. D&D calls the inherited name a clan name, while other games and most players simply say last name or family name. Any entry here, from Garrick to Thistlesong, can be used as either.

What are good last names for rock, forest and deep gnomes?

Rock gnomes suit tinker compounds such as Coppertwist, Cogwinder and Lathewright. Forest gnomes suit burrow names such as Acornpocket, Fernfoot and Hazeltoe. Deep gnomes, the svirfneblin of the Underdark, suit mining and stone names such as Cobaltvein, Veintracer and Gritstone.

Can I use these surnames for World of Warcraft gnomes?

Yes. Warcraft gnomes carry busy engineering surnames in the manner of Mekkatorque and Thermaplugg, which belong to Blizzard's characters and are not entries here. The inventor names in this list, such as Sparknozzle, Boomspanner and Gyrogimbal, are written in that style for your own characters. Check the name rules of your realm before you settle on one.
