Fantasy Gnome Name Generator

Gnome names in modern fantasy owe most of their flavor to Dungeons & Dragons, where a gnome typically has a bouncy given name (Boddynock, Ellywick, Zook, Nissa), a clan name inherited from a large extended family (Nackle, Daergel, Turen, Scheppen), and a nickname earned from some memorable incident (Oneshoe, Stumbleduck, Filchbatter). Gnomes are said to collect names the way other people collect trinkets, so a single character might answer to half a dozen of them depending on who is asking.

The sound is what makes a gnome name recognizable: short vowels, doubled consonants, and a lot of -ick, -ock, -ell, and -in endings. Rock gnomes and Warcraft-style gnomes lean into tinker surnames built from gears, springs, whistles, and cogs, while forest and deep gnomes prefer quieter, earthy names drawn from burrows, moss, roots, and lanterns. A good gnome name should be fun to say aloud at the table but still feel like it belongs to a person.
