Gnome cities in published fantasy fall into three recognizable families, and the names in this generator follow all three. The first is the tinker-city: Warcraft's Gnomeregan, Mechagon and New Tinkertown, Dragonlance's Mount Nevermind, Eberron's Korranberg and Trolanport. These names sound industrious, with hard g, k and t sounds, machine words (gear, cog, bolt, sprocket, piston) and grand endings like -opolis, -spire or -berg that hint at a gnome's love of overbuilt projects.

The second family is the cozy burrow-town of forest and rock gnomes: Hardbuckler and Songfarla in the Forgotten Realms, Brastlewark and Wispil in Pathfinder. Here the model is the English village name, softened and made bouncy. Compounds such as Fizzlebrook, Thimbleford or Wobblecog Wharf use doubled consonants, -le and -ick sounds, and place words like Hollow, Dell, Warren and Burrow that say the houses are half underground.
