Gnome City Name Generator

Gnome cities in published fantasy fall into three recognizable families, and the names in this generator follow all three. The first is the tinker-city: Warcraft's Gnomeregan, Mechagon and New Tinkertown, Dragonlance's Mount Nevermind, Eberron's Korranberg and Trolanport. These names sound industrious, with hard g, k and t sounds, machine words (gear, cog, bolt, sprocket, piston) and grand endings like -opolis, -spire or -berg that hint at a gnome's love of overbuilt projects.

The second family is the cozy burrow-town of forest and rock gnomes: Hardbuckler and Songfarla in the Forgotten Realms, Brastlewark and Wispil in Pathfinder. Here the model is the English village name, softened and made bouncy. Compounds such as Fizzlebrook, Thimbleford or Wobblecog Wharf use doubled consonants, -le and -ick sounds, and place words like Hollow, Dell, Warren and Burrow that say the houses are half underground. Hyphenated forms like Sprocket-on-Spindle or Little Copperpot add an old-country feel.

The third is the svirfneblin deep-gnome city, best known from Blingdenstone: quiet, stony names built on -stone, -brek and -delve, or English phrases about gems and silence (The Quiet Delve, Ruby Pockets). Decide which kind of gnomes live in your city, then match the sound: bright and clattering for tinkers, rounded and rural for burrowers, hushed and mineral for the deep.
