About githzerai names

Githzerai are the ascetic branch of the gith, the people who broke free from the mind flayers and then split from their warlike githyanki cousins to build monasteries in the roiling chaos of Limbo. Their names reflect that discipline. Canonical D&D githzerai names are short and hard-edged: Dak'kon, Duurth, Ferzth, Shrakk, and Xorm for men; Adaka, Ezhelya, Immilzin, Izera, and Uweya for women. Apostrophes mark a clipped glottal break rather than decoration, and consonant clusters like zh, rr, and kk give the names a stony, guttural sound.

Unlike githyanki, githzerai rarely use family or clan surnames. A githzerai is known by a single name, sometimes followed by an honorific. Zerth is the title of a monk who has mastered mind over matter, named for Zerthimon, the founder who led the schism. Anarchs are those who can reshape Limbo itself with thought. Menyar-Ag-Gith, the ancient wizard-king of Shra'kt'lor, shows how legendary figures may carry a longer, hyphenated name.

When inventing your own, aim for one or two syllables, end on a hard consonant, and resist anything soft or elvish. A githzerai name should sound like it was chosen for economy, not beauty.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Keep it short: one or two syllables with a hard ending (-k, -th, -zh, -rm) reads instantly as githzerai, while long flowing names read as elf or githyanki.
  • Use an apostrophe only once per name, and only where a real pause would fall, as in Dak'kon or Ka'ral.
  • Add the honorific Zerth for a senior monk or Anarch for a chaos-shaper; both are recognized titles in D&D lore and tell your table who this NPC is.
  • Skip surnames unless the character is exceptional; a descriptive byname such as Voidstill or Slaad-Hunter fits githzerai culture better than a family name.
  • For a mixed gith campaign, contrast githzerai names against githyanki ones like Vlaakith or Gith'rai so players can tell the two peoples apart by sound alone.

Frequently asked questions

How are githzerai names different from githyanki names?

Githzerai names are shorter, blunter, and used without clan names, such as Dak'kon or Ezhelya. Githyanki names tend to be longer and more ornate, like Vlaakith or Zetch'r'r, and githyanki knights often carry additional titles. Both share the gith habit of apostrophes and hard consonants.

Who are the most famous githzerai in D&D?

Zerthimon, the founder who led the githzerai away from Gith's war and whose teachings shape their philosophy; Dak'kon, the zerth companion from Planescape: Torment; and Menyar-Ag-Gith, the wizard-king of the Limbo city Shra'kt'lor.

What does zerth mean in a githzerai name?

Zerth is an honorific for a githzerai who has achieved mastery of body and mind, typically a high-ranking monk. It comes from Zerthimon's name and is placed before the personal name, as in Zerth Dak'kon.

Can I use these githzerai names in my own game or writing?

Yes. The invented names are free to use in any personal or commercial project. Githzerai as a race and specific characters like Dak'kon and Zerthimon are Wizards of the Coast intellectual property, so use them at your table freely but keep them out of published work.
