About githyanki names

Githyanki are the astral warrior-race of Dungeons & Dragons: gaunt, yellow-skinned psionics who threw off the mind flayers, took to the Astral Plane and now serve the lich-queen Vlaakith, riding red dragons and raiding for plunder from silver ships. Lae'zel of Baldur's Gate 3 made them famous, and her name is a perfect template for the whole culture: two clipped syllables broken by an apostrophe that stands for a glottal stop, spoken like a threat.

The official 5e lists in Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes give the flavor. Male githyanki names include Elirdain, Gaath, Ja'adoc, Kar'i'nas, Lykus, Quith, Ris'a'an, Tropos, Viran and Xamodas; female names include Aaryl, B'noor, Fenelzi'ir, Jen'lig, Pah'zel, Quorstyl, Sirruth, Vaira, Yessune and Zar'ryth. Consonants are hard (k, z, th, r), vowels are short, and apostrophes appear anywhere from the second letter to the middle of the name. Githyanki also lean heavily on rank. Kith'rak is a captain, sarth a sergeant, gish a fighter-mage, ghustil a healer, sa'varsh a creche instructor, ch'r'ai a psion of the Y'llek creche, and Supreme Commander the highest field rank under the queen.

Tips for choosing a name

Use one apostrophe, not three: Lae'zel, Zar'ryth and Ja'adoc read as githyanki, while a name like Z'a'r'k reads as a joke.
Attach a rank when the character has one. Kith'rak for a captain, sarth for a sergeant, gish for a warrior-mage, ghustil for a healer; drop the rank once your party is on first-name terms.
Female and male githyanki names follow the same rules, so pick by sound rather than looking for a feminine ending; Vaira, Yessune and Aaryl are all canon female names.
Do not name a player character Vlaakith, Gith or Zerthimon; those are the queen, the founder and the prophet, and any githyanki NPC would react badly.
For a githyanki who has rejected Vlaakith (like Lae'zel's arc in BG3), consider a name that drops the apostrophe entirely to signal the break, such as Ravaan or Nask.
