Generate flumph names for D&D: puffing sound names like Floop and Pfwee, glow names like Softglow and Tickled Pink, polite thought-names like Gentle Warning and Pardon-the-Intrusion, cloister names like Cloister of the Warm Vent, and pet names like Sir Floats-a-Lot.

About flumph names

Flumphs are the gentle oddities of Dungeons & Dragons: small, lawful good aberrations that drift through the Underdark on jets of air, feed on the psionic energy of other creatures and speak only by telepathy. They live in groups called cloisters, and they are known for warning kindly adventurers about the mind flayers and other horrors whose thoughts they have overheard. A flumph also glows, and the color follows its mood: soft pink for amusement, green for curiosity, deep blue for sadness and crimson for anger.

The rulebooks give flumphs no official naming convention, so every name here is invented in a style that suits the creature, and the list keeps five kinds in equal measure. Sound names copy the puff of the jets (Floop, Pfwee, Whuff). Glow names come from the mood colors (Softglow, Curious Green, Tickled Pink). Thought-names are how a telepath's name might land in a listener's head, as a phrase instead of a word (Gentle Warning, Drifts-Above-Still-Water, Sorry-to-Interrupt). Cloister names cover the group itself (Cloister of the Warm Vent, The Drifting Choir), and pet names are what a party ends up calling its floating friend (Pancake, Flumphrey, Moral Support).

How to choose flumph names

  • Match the kind of name to who is speaking. A flumph introducing itself by telepathy suits a thought-name such as Means-No-Harm, while the party's nickname for it can be as silly as Dumpling or Hubcap.
  • Let the glow do some roleplay. If you name a flumph Quiet Blue or Amused Pink, describe its light changing when the mood at the table does.
  • Name the cloister as well as the individual. Flumphs are social, so a line such as "I am Floop of the Still Pool Cloister" gives players a place to look for later.
  • Keep sound names short and breathy. Say Pfwee, Whuff or Hoom aloud: if it sounds like air leaving a small balloon, it fits.
  • A flumph that has been listening to a mind flayer colony can carry its errand in its name. Overheard-Something-Troubling or There-Are-Illithids-Nearby is a plot hook and a name at once.

Frequently asked questions

Do flumphs have an official naming convention in D&D?

No. The D&D books describe how flumphs live, feed and communicate but give no official naming convention for them. The names in this list are invented in styles that fit the creature, from sound names such as Floop to thought-names such as Kind Regards.

What is a good name for a flumph companion?

Parties tend to give a flumph sidekick a fond, slightly silly name. Sir Floats-a-Lot, Flumphrey, Pancake, Little Buddy and The Party Conscience are all in the list. If the flumph objects, it will say so very politely.

What is a group of flumphs called?

A group of flumphs is called a cloister. A fifth of the list names one, such as Cloister of Gentle Updrafts, The Drifting Choir and The Warm Vent Fellowship, and these work as locations or factions in an Underdark adventure.

Why are some names written as phrases with hyphens?

Flumphs speak only by telepathy, so a name may arrive as a meaning instead of a sound. Hyphenated thought-names such as Hovers-at-a-Respectful-Distance or Did-Not-Mean-to-Startle-You are one way to show that at the table. This is a style invented for the list, not a rule from the books.
