Generate soft, spore-scented names for myconids, the peaceful mushroom people of the Underdark. Built for D&D 5e characters, druid companions, and any fungal colony that needs a Sovereign, a circle, or an individual sprout to introduce.

About myconid names

Myconids are the mushroom folk of the Underdark, best known from Dungeons & Dragons, where they communicate through spore clouds called rapport rather than speech. Because they rarely talk aloud, myconid names are things other creatures give them or rough translations of an impression: a texture, a colour of cap, a temperature, a mood. That is why so many good myconid names read like descriptions (Palegill, Softstem, Sootveil) or soft, damp-sounding syllables (Ubb, Plip, Fenno) rather than heroic titles.

The canon offers a few anchors. Neverlight Grove in Out of the Abyss is ruled by Sovereign Basidia and Sovereign Phylo, and other published myconids include Rasp, Loam, Umbel, Brelm and the tragic Yestabrod. Real mycology is the other rich source: genus names like Amanita, Mycena, Russula and Morchella already sound like fantasy names, and common names such as Inkcap, Witchbutter, Foxfire and Ghostpipe make evocative descriptive names for individual sprouts.

A good myconid name is short, quiet and slightly wet-sounding. Avoid harsh consonant clusters and anything that sounds like a warrior. Add "Sovereign" for the colony's leader, attach a location or circle name for elders, and give a newly budded myconid a tiny sprout-like name it can grow out of over the campaign.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick by role: Sovereign titles for colony leaders, place-linked names (Osk of the Damp Hollow) for elders, and one-syllable sprout names for young or comedic myconids.
  • Use real mushroom genus names as-is when you want something that sounds alien but pronounceable; players usually cannot tell Mycena from an invented word.
  • Since myconids speak through spores, let NPCs mangle the name differently: a drow might call the same myconid Sootveil while a dwarf calls it Greycap.
  • For a whole colony, choose one naming style and stick with it so the circle feels like a single culture rather than a random assortment.
  • Descriptive compound names work best when they describe something visible at the table, so match the name to your miniature or art.

Frequently asked questions

Do myconids in D&D actually have names?

Yes. Published adventures name them (Sovereign Basidia, Phylo, Rasp, Loam, Umbel, Yestabrod), though lore suggests these are approximations of spore-impressions rather than spoken words. Descriptive names given by other creatures are entirely in keeping with the setting.

What does a myconid sovereign name look like?

Sovereigns are simply the largest, oldest myconid in a circle, so the name is usually a normal myconid name with the title in front: Sovereign Basidia or Sovereign Umbelcap. Adding a colony name (Sovereign Rasp of Neverlight) works well for a recurring NPC.

Can I use these names for a playable myconid or fungus-themed character outside D&D?

Absolutely. The names are original or drawn from real mycology and public folklore, so they are safe for homebrew races, Pathfinder fungus leshys, video game characters and fiction. Only the few canonical D&D NPC names belong to Wizards of the Coast.

How do I make a myconid name sound less like a monster?

Lean on soft consonants (l, m, b, w, sh) and short vowels, and describe caps, gills, moisture or light instead of weapons or blood. Myconids are gentle, communal creatures, and their names should feel like it.
