1,000 real surnames and older patronymic forms from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and the Isle of Man, each labeled by nation, such as Ó Briain (Irish), MacLeod (Scottish, Norse root), Llewellyn (Welsh), Trevithick (Cornish), Le Goff (Breton, the smith) and Quayle (Manx, son of Paul).

About Celtic last names

Each Celtic nation built surnames its own way. Irish and Scottish Gaelic names are mostly patronymic: Ó means a descendant and Mac a son, so Ó Briain became O'Brien and MacDhòmhnaill became MacDonald. Welsh patronymics with ap and ab froze into Price (from ap Rhys), Bowen (from ab Owain) and the many names in -s, like Jones and Davies. Cornish surnames are often farm names in Tre, Pol and Pen. Breton has place names in Ker and nicknames with the French article, like Le Bihan, the small. On the Isle of Man, Mac wore down to a C, K or Q, giving Quayle, Kermode and Kissack.

The label in parentheses says where a surname is at home, not which language it came from, so Norse and Norman arrivals are marked, as in MacLeod (Scottish, Norse root) and Fitzgerald (Irish, Norman origin). A short meaning follows where it is well established. That lets you follow one idea across nations: the smith is Gow in Scotland, McGowan in Ireland, Le Goff in Brittany, Angove in Cornwall and Gawne on the Isle of Man.

Of the 1,000 entries, 237 are Irish, 198 Breton, 197 Scottish, 118 Cornish, 115 Welsh and 115 Manx. The other 20 are older patronymic forms such as ap Rhys and mac Néill, for settings before fixed surnames.

How to choose Celtic last names

  • Choose the nation before the name. The label after each entry tells you which tradition it belongs to, so a Cornish miner gets Trevithick or Penhaligon and a Manx fisherman gets Kermode or Qualtrough.
  • Decide between the Gaelic and the anglicized spelling by setting. Ó Súilleabháin and MacDhòmhnaill suit a Gaelic-speaking household or an early setting, while O'Sullivan and MacDonald suit most later ones.
  • Use the patronymic entries for early medieval characters. A form like ap Rhys or mac Néill names a person's own father and changes with each generation, so the son of a man called Rhys ap Gruffudd is ap Rhys, not ap Gruffudd.
  • Keep the accents and apostrophes. The fada in Ó Néill, the grave accent in MacLeòid and the c'h in Le Floc'h are part of the spelling, and dropping them fits an emigrant family better than one at home.
  • For more depth on one nation, move on to its own page. The Irish, Scottish, Welsh and Cornish surname pages linked below each go much further than this overview.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a Celtic last name?

Here it means a surname at home in one of the six Celtic nations: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and the Isle of Man. Most come from a Celtic language, such as Ó Briain (Irish), Llewellyn (Welsh) and Trevithick (Cornish). Some long-settled names have Norse or Norman roots, and the label says so, as in Corlett (Manx, Norse root) and Burke (Irish, Norman origin).

Are these Celtic last names good for fantasy characters?

Yes, with one thing to know: they are real surnames, not invented ones. A fantasy clan gets a consistent sound when its names come from one nation, for example Tregenza, Polglase and Nankervis from the Cornish entries or Kerguelen, Le Dantec and Morvan from the Breton ones. Mixing nations works better for a whole world than for one family.

Why do so many Manx surnames start with C, K or Q?

Most began with Mac, and in Manx speech the Mac wore away until only its last sound was left on the front of the name. Quilliam (Manx, son of William) and Kissack (Manx, son of Isaac) show the pattern. The same wearing down gave Kermode, Clague and Qualtrough.

What is the difference between Mac, Mc and Ó?

Mac means son in Irish and Scottish Gaelic, and Mc is only a shorter way of writing it, so neither spelling marks a name as Irish or Scottish. Ó means a descendant and belongs to Irish names. Irish also has forms for women, such as Ní Bhriain for a daughter of the Ó Briain family, and the list includes a few of them.
