Generate fictional names that sound like real people but belong to no one: literary and contemporary full names, international names for a believable cast, and fantasy and sci-fi names with grounded phonology. Built for novels, screenplays, games, tabletop campaigns and any story that needs a cast.
About fictional names
A fictional name has to pass two tests that a real name never faces. It must feel like it could sit on a birth certificate or a ship's manifest, and it must be distinct enough that a reader who meets forty names in a novel can still tell Corvin Aldane from Cormac Ellery three chapters later. The easiest way to hit both is the method most novelists actually use: take a real but slightly uncommon given name and pair it with a surname that is rare, invented, or borrowed from a place, a trade or an old word. Elowen Marsh, Thaddeus Kerrigan and Ysolde Varren all work this way, and none of them belong to anyone famous.
Genre shifts the recipe rather than replacing it. Contemporary fiction wants names that sound like they came from somewhere, so the list mixes Irish, Nigerian, Polish, Turkish, Japanese and Mexican names alongside Anglo ones. Fantasy wants older consonant clusters and endings borrowed from Welsh, Norse or Latin: Cadeyrn Moss, Rhoswen Vail, Torvin Gale. Science fiction tends toward clipped, hard-edged forms like Kael Voss and Evren Sarn. Every entry here is a full name with a first and last half, so you can use it whole, split it, or swap halves between entries to make something that is unmistakably yours.
Tips for choosing a name
- Give your main cast names that start with different letters and have different syllable counts; readers skim, and Marcus, Matthias and Marlowe blur together on the page.
- Match the name's origin to the character's background and the setting's era: a name that feels Victorian reads wrong on a modern teenager unless the contrast is the point.
- Say the name aloud in a line of dialogue. If a friend would never shout it across a room, it is too ornate for a protagonist and may suit a minor villain or a mentor instead.
- Search any name you plan to keep. Invented combinations are rarely unique, and you want to avoid sharing a name with a real public figure or a well-known character in the same genre.
- Keep a list of rejected names for background characters; a name that was too plain for a hero is often perfect for a neighbour, a clerk or a ship's cook.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a name sound fictional rather than fake?
Plausibility. Fake-sounding names pile up exotic syllables or rhymes; fictional names that work borrow real naming logic, such as a real given name with an unusual surname, or a surname taken from a place or an old occupation, so the ear accepts them as belonging to a person who could exist.
Can I use these names in a published book or game?
Yes. Names are not protected by copyright, and these were invented for this purpose. Before publishing, search the exact full name to make sure it does not belong to a well-known real person or a famous character, which could confuse readers or attract unwanted attention.
Why are there names from so many different cultures?
Because modern fiction is rarely set in a single-culture world. A cast drawn entirely from one naming tradition reads as a deliberate choice, so the list includes Irish, Nigerian, Turkish, Japanese, Polish, Spanish and Scandinavian names alongside invented fantasy and sci-fi forms, letting you build a believable mixed ensemble.
How do I turn one of these into a fantasy or sci-fi name?
Shift the spelling toward the genre's sounds. Fantasy tolerates y, ae and double consonants (Ysolde, Caelan, Morwenna) and surnames built from nature or old words. Sci-fi prefers short, hard syllables and clipped surnames such as Voss, Sarn or Vesh. Swapping halves between two entries is a fast way to get there.
