Generate thieves guild names for D&D, Pathfinder, Skyrim-style RPGs, and fantasy fiction: cant-flavoured brotherhoods, cover-business fronts, gutter-slang gangs, and elegant burglars' societies. Every name reads like it belongs in a city with a Shadow Market.

About thieves guild names

Thieves' guilds are a staple of fantasy because they combine two real traditions: the medieval trade guild, with its charters, ranks, and dues, and the historical criminal underworld, with its cant, fences, and secret courts. Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar Thieves' Guild set the template, Terry Pratchett's Ankh-Morpork guild made it a licensed civic institution, and Skyrim's Nightingales, Thief's City Wardens, and Elder Scrolls' Grey Fox turned the idea into a whole genre. Real history supplies the Court of Miracles in Paris and the Sanhedrin of London's Rookery.

Good guild names follow a few patterns. Trade-guild parody: 'The Worshipful Company of Second-Storey Men' or 'The Guild of Discreet Acquisition' sounds official and funny at once. Cant and imagery: names built from thieves' tools and tokens (the Crossed Keys, the Silk Ladder, the Bent Penny) or from vermin and night birds (the Ferrets, the Nightjars, the Rooftop Runners). Fronts: a bellringers' guild or candlemakers' association that is obviously not what it claims. And place names: attach a district (Ashgate, Fishgut Lane, Nine Bridges) and the guild belongs to your city.

Use the list to name a single guild, or pick three from different registers to populate a city with rival organisations: an old, respectable guild, a gutter gang snapping at its heels, and a genteel society of burglars who deny they exist.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide whether the guild is a genuine institution (with a charter and dues) or an outlaw gang; official-sounding names suit the former, animal and slang names the latter.
  • Anchor the name to a district, street, or landmark in your city (the Ashgate Adders, the Fishgut Lane Company); it instantly implies turf and rivals.
  • Pick names from thieves' tools and tokens (keys, gloves, ropes, coins, latches) rather than 'shadow' and 'blade' words that every gang uses.
  • Give the guild a legitimate front name and a whispered street name; players and readers love discovering that the Candlemakers' Benevolent Association is the local guild.
  • For D&D, tie the name to the guild's specialty: fences, second-storey burglars, dips and cutpurses, forgers, or information brokers each deserve a different flavour.

Frequently asked questions

Were thieves' guilds real?

Not as formal guilds, but the idea has roots. Medieval and early modern cities had organised underworlds with their own slang (thieves' cant), hierarchies, and territories, such as the Court of Miracles in Paris and the flash houses of London. Fantasy fiction, starting with Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar, turned them into chartered guilds.

What are famous thieves' guilds in games and fiction?

The Thieves Guild and Nightingales in The Elder Scrolls, the Ankh-Morpork Thieves' Guild in Discworld, the Zhentarim and Xanathar's Guild in Dungeons & Dragons, the Rogue's Guild in the Thief series, and the Grey Company in Robin Hobb's Farseer books all show the range from licensed institution to secret cabal.

How should a thieves' guild name differ from an assassins' guild name?

Thieves' guild names lean playful, mercantile, or sly (the Bent Penny, the Guild of Discreet Acquisition), while assassins' guilds are usually austere and quasi-religious (the Whispered Ones, the Dark Brotherhood). If your guild does both, name the front and the inner circle separately.

Can I use these names in my D&D campaign or published fiction?

Yes. All of the names are original and free to use in homebrew campaigns, novels, and games. Existing franchise guild names such as the Nightingales or the Zhentarim are only mentioned as examples of the genre.
