About raider gang names

A raider gang name has one job: to be shouted, spray-painted on an overpass and remembered by the settlers who survive it. The models are Fallout's Rust Devils, Forged, Disciples and Blood Eagles, Mad Max's War Boys and Buzzards. Almost all of them follow the same recipe, which is one concrete wasteland noun (rust, ash, scrap, slag, rebar, gasoline, marrow) plus a group word that tells you how the gang sees itself: Boys and Crew for a loose outfit, Kings and Lords for a gang that taxes a road, Sons and Disciples for one that has turned into a cult.

The flavor comes from what the gang is built around. Machinery gangs (Piston Heads, Crankshaft Clan) raid for parts; chem and rad gangs (Glow Dogs, Geiger Gang, Jet Set Raiders) are twitchy and desperate; animal packs (Overpass Hyenas, Saltwater Jackals) hunt; cannibal outfits (The Gristle Gang, Butcher's Bill) exist to frighten; and boss-led gangs (Knuckles' Boys, Queen Maggot's Court) die with their leader. Single-word names such as The Scorched or The Hollowed suit older, quieter gangs that no longer need to explain themselves.

The list mixes a few canonical gangs with hundreds of originals, grouped by theme so you can pull a region's worth of rival crews that sound like they share a wasteland.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Pick the group word to match the gang's size and age. A dozen scavengers are Boys, a Crew or a Mob; a gang that holds territory becomes Kings, Lords or Barons; a gang that has been around long enough to have rituals becomes Sons, Disciples, a Church or a Clan.
  • Name rival gangs from different themes so players can tell them apart at a glance: a machinery gang, a chem gang, an animal gang and a cult in the same region read as four cultures rather than four lists of tough words.
  • A possessive name (Mad Dog's Crew, Old Gristle's Gang) tells everyone the gang falls apart when the boss dies, which is a plot hook; a place name (Greywater Gang, Deadfall Pass Gang) tells them where the ambush will be.
  • For Fallout-style settings keep names one to three words and ugly; for Mad Max-style settings lean on engines, chrome and sun (Cult of the V8, Chrome Teeth, Orange Sky Raiders) and let the gang have a look that matches.
  • Say the name out loud as a threat and as graffiti. If it does not work shouted across a scrapyard or sprayed on a tanker truck, shorten it.

Frequently asked questions

Which raider gangs in this list are from Fallout or Mad Max?

The Rust Devils, Forged, Disciples, Operators, Pack, Fiends, Great Khans, Cutthroats, Gunners, Blood Eagles and Tunnel Snakes are from the Fallout games, and War Boys, Buzzards, Rock Riders and Cult of the V8 come from Mad Max: Fury Road. Everything else is original, written to sit alongside them.

How do I make a raider gang name sound less generic?

Replace the abstract word with a specific object. Death Riders is generic; Tire Iron Boys, Bottlecap Bandits and Broken Axle Gang are not, because they name something the gang actually owns or does. Pairing a body word with a tool word (Meat Hook Mob, Bone Saw Brotherhood) is the quickest way to get the right register.

Can I use these for a Fallout mod, a Rust or DayZ clan, or a D&D wasteland campaign?

Yes. The original names are free to use for mods, server clans, Fallout 2d20 or Mutant: Year Zero campaigns, and fiction. Canonical names belong to their publishers and are best kept to fan works, and for a public clan tag check that another group on the same server is not already using the name.

What is the difference between a raider gang and a raider tribe or cult?

In most wasteland fiction a gang is an opportunistic crew held together by a boss and loot; a tribe has a shared origin and customs and often a place name; a cult has a belief, usually about the bomb, the road or the engine. The naming follows: gangs take Boys, Crew, Kings or a boss's name; tribes take Clan, Tribe or a region; cults take Church, Sons, Disciples, Order or Covenant.
