Generate Fallout faction names for every corner of the wasteland: canon groups like the Brotherhood of Steel, NCR and Children of Atom, plus hundreds of original raider gangs, settler councils, caravan companies, cults and remnant militaries for mods, Fallout 2d20 campaigns and fan fiction.

About Fallout faction names

Fallout faction names tell you what a group was before the bombs and what it became after. The big powers sound like institutions that survived or rebuilt: Brotherhood of Steel, New California Republic, the Enclave, the Institute. Raider gangs go the other way with short, ugly plurals that fit on a spray-painted wall: the Fiends, the Jackals, the Forged, the Cutthroats, the Gourmands. Between them sit the groups that give each game its texture, such as caravan companies (Crimson Caravan, Happy Trails), settler councils (Responders, Foundation), tribes (Dead Horses, Sorrows, White Legs), cults (Children of Atom, Cult of the Mothman) and crime families (the Omertas, the Van Graffs, the Bishops).

The best original names borrow a real pre-war thing and twist it. A faction can grow out of a brand (Atom Cats from a garage, Slocum's Joe franchisees), a building (Tenpenny Tower, Tunnel Snakes from a vault hallway), a place (Great Khans, Blackwater Bandits) or an old military or government unit that never stood down (Talon Company, Secret Service). Religious groups name themselves after the bomb, the glow, or a relic of technology; republics and confederacies name themselves after a geography they can actually hold.

The list opens with canon factions from Fallout 1 through 76 and the TV series, then moves into original groups in the same registers.

How to choose Fallout faction names

  • Decide what the faction does first, then match the register: caravan companies and traders get business-like names, raiders get a one-word plural, settlers and republics get a place name plus a civic word (Council, Co-op, Confederacy, Yeomanry).
  • Pull from pre-war Americana. Brand names, franchise chains, highway numbers, utility companies and military bases all make convincing roots, the way the Atom Cats and Route 66 style gangs do.
  • Keep raider gang names to one or two words. The Forged, the Fiends and the Disciples are memorable precisely because they are short and slightly absurd.
  • For cults, name the thing they worship (Atom, the Mothman, a reactor, a broadcast) rather than the cult itself; Children of Atom and Cult of the Mothman both follow this rule.
  • Regional flavor matters: a Mojave faction might reference Vegas, Hoover Dam or the Legion, while a Commonwealth one leans on Boston landmarks and pre-war New England.

Frequently asked questions

Which Fallout factions are included?

Canon groups from Fallout 1 and 2 (Hub merchants, New Reno families, Vault City, the Unity), Fallout 3 (Talon Company, Regulators, Outcasts), New Vegas (NCR, Legion, Great Khans, Boomers, the Strip families), Fallout 4 and Nuka-World (Minutemen, Railroad, Gunners, Operators, Disciples, Pack), Fallout 76 (Responders, Free States, Blood Eagles, Cult of the Mothman) and the TV series, followed by original factions.

How do I name a raider gang versus a settlement faction?

Raiders use short, threatening plurals like the Fiends or the Cutthroats. Settlements and republics use a place name plus a civic noun such as Council, Co-op, Republic or Militia, which signals organization rather than menace.

Can I use these names in a Fallout mod or tabletop campaign?

Original names are free for mods, Fallout 2d20 campaigns, settlement roleplay and fan fiction. Canon factions like the Brotherhood of Steel belong to Bethesda, so use them in fan works rather than anything commercial.

What makes a faction name feel like Fallout instead of generic post-apocalypse?

Retro-futuristic Americana. Referencing 1950s brands, vaults, atomic imagery, old highways and pre-war institutions makes a name feel like the setting, while generic words like Scavengers or Survivors could belong to any wasteland.
