Names for an eidolon, the otherworldly being a summoner calls and keeps: true names like Vaszareth and Karnox, epithets like Oum-Sareth the Many-Winged, ritual names like Vessel-of-Nine and pet-names like Old Nine-Eyes.

About eidolon names

Eidolon is a Greek word for an image or phantom. Homer uses it for the shades of the dead and for a likeness made by a god, and in one old telling of the Trojan War only a phantom of Helen ever went to Troy. Fantasy games borrowed the word for the being a summoner calls: the bonded otherworldly companion of Pathfinder's summoner, and the great summons of several Final Fantasy games.

The 1,000 names here cover that whole range. There are short unearthly true names (Vaszareth, Karnox), true names with an epithet (Oum-Sareth the Many-Winged, Yzmerune Who Answers), and names by form: celestial, fiendish and aberrant, draconic and beast-shaped, fey and plant, elemental and construct, ancestral guides of the dead. Ritual names such as Vessel-of-Nine sit beside Greek-style phantom doubles such as The Pale Twin and the pet-names a summoner uses after years together, like Old Nine-Eyes.

Final Fantasy's summons are mostly borrowed from world myth (Ifrit, Shiva, Bahamut, Odin), so a small share of this list is borrowed too, and each of those 30 entries carries its source in parentheses, as in Ifrit (from Arabic lore). The rest are made up in the style of the genre, and none is meant as a character from any game.

How to choose eidolon names

  • Decide the form first. A celestial eidolon suits a name like Choir-of-One, a construct suits Brass Covenant and a fey one suits Laughing Hawthorn; a name that matches the shape saves you explaining it.
  • Give it two names: a long true name for the ritual, such as Zaratheon, Sovereign of the Last Ember, and a short one for the middle of a fight. The pet-names in the list, like Bigger Half, are written for that second slot.
  • Say the true name out loud before you commit. You will call it every session, so pick one your table can repeat after hearing it once.
  • For a phantom double in the Greek sense, name it after the person it copies. Second Kallias and Not-Theron both say whose face it wears.
  • A borrowed myth name such as Bahamut or Leviathan arrives with centuries of meaning. That can be the point, or it can crowd out your own idea of the creature.

Frequently asked questions

What is an eidolon?

The word is Greek for an image or phantom, and Homer uses it for the shades of the dead. In fantasy games it usually means a being called by a summoner: a bonded companion from another plane in Pathfinder, or one of the great summons in several Final Fantasy games. This list has names for all three senses.

Are these official Pathfinder or Final Fantasy names?

No. This site is not affiliated with either game, and the list is meant for players naming their own eidolons. The few names borrowed from myth and folklore, such as Ifrit (from Arabic lore) and Odin (from Norse myth), are labelled with their source; Final Fantasy took most of its summon names from the same old sources.

How do I name an eidolon for a summoner character?

Start with what it is and how the two of them met. A solemn bond suits a true name with an epithet, like Oum-Sareth the Many-Winged, or a ritual name like Vessel-of-Nine. A summoner who has lived beside the creature for twenty years is more likely to shout Old Nine-Eyes.

Why do some names have a source in parentheses?

Those 30 entries are real names from myth, folklore, scripture and epic, not inventions: 25 creatures and figures that games often use as summons, and five phantoms from Greek sources, such as Eidolon of Helen (from Greek myth). The label is there so nothing borrowed passes as new. Drop the parentheses when you use the name.
