Generate barony names that sound like real medieval fiefs: English, French, and German-style place names, holdings tied to castles and rivers, and formal titles for the barons who rule them. Built for fantasy worldbuilding, D&D domains, and historical fiction.

About barony names

A barony is the smallest of the great feudal holdings, ranked beneath a county or duchy, and it is almost always named after a place rather than a family. Historical English baronies were named for the caput, the chief castle or manor: the Barony of Kendal, of Alnwick, of Skipton, of Pontefract. Norman lords brought French place names with them (Beauchamp, Montfichet, Ferrers), which is why so many English baronies have French-sounding names. In the Holy Roman Empire, a Freiherr's holding took German castle names like Falkenstein or Lichtenfels.

That gives you three reliable structures. The most common is 'Barony of' plus a settlement name built from English elements: -ford, -bury, -mere, -wick, -thorpe, -combe, -hurst, and -stead. The second is a geographic barony named for the land itself: the Barony of the Grey Fen, of the Two Rivers, of the Salt Coast. The third adds a descriptor that tells you the barony's political role, such as a Marcher barony on a border, a Free barony owing no duke, or a Bishop's barony held by the church.

The list mixes real holdings of Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Sicily, and the crusader states with invented ones and ready-made barons, baronesses, lords, and ladies. Beside baronies come honours, lordships, Baronnie, Herrschaft, Baronía, and related holdings: fiefs, castellanies, liberties, regalities, thanages.

How to choose barony names

  • Name the barony after its chief castle or town, then reuse that name for the baron's family: the Barony of Greystoke is held by Baron Greystoke.
  • Use place-name suffixes consistently within a region (-ford, -mere, -wick for one kingdom; -stein, -burg, -feld for its neighbor) so borders are audible on the map.
  • A descriptor like Marcher, Free, or Bishop's does worldbuilding work: it tells readers who the baron answers to and where the trouble is.
  • For a fantasy setting, keep most baronies plainly named and reserve dramatic ones (Ebonhollow, Bleakwater) for holdings that earned the reputation.
  • Baronies are small; a barony named 'of the Northern Reach' should be small enough that one castle can plausibly control it.

Frequently asked questions

How were medieval baronies actually named?

Almost always after the caput, the principal castle or manor from which the baron held his lands: Barony of Kendal, Barony of Alnwick, Barony of Berkeley. The family often took the same name, so the place name and surname became interchangeable over generations.

Where does a barony sit in the feudal hierarchy?

Below a county or earldom and a duchy, above a knight's manor. A baron typically held directly from the crown or a great lord and owed knights in return. In fantasy games like D&D or Pathfinder Kingmaker, a barony is the usual first domain a player character receives.

What is the difference between a barony and a duchy or county?

Size and rank. A duchy is ruled by a duke and may contain several counties; a county by a count or earl; a barony by a baron and usually covers a single castle and its surrounding manors. For larger domains, use the Duchy Name Generator or Kingdom Name Generator.

Can I use these barony names in my novel or game?

Yes. All names, including the historical baronies, are free to use in any personal or commercial project. Real place names are not protected, though you may want to invent your own if your setting should not evoke real places.
