Duchy Name Generator

A duchy is the territory ruled by a duke or duchess, ranking below a kingdom and above a county or barony. Historically almost every duchy took its name from a place, a people, or a river rather than from its ruling family: Burgundy from the Burgundians, Saxony from the Saxons, Brabant from an old Frankish district, Normandy from the Norse settlers of northern France. When dynastic branches split their lands, hyphenated forms appeared, which is why we have Saxe-Coburg, Saxe-Weimar and Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Some duchies, such as Lancaster and Cornwall, survive today as royal estates rather than governed territories.

A convincing invented duchy therefore needs a place-name that fits the language of your setting. English-flavoured duchies use endings such as -moor, -mere, -holt, -wick, -combe and -dale (Aldenmoor, Elstermere, Lorwyck); Germanic ones use -mark, -berg, -holm and -stein (Ostmark, Kaltenberg, Wystenholm); French ones favour -mont, -court and -vaine (Bellamont, Valcourt, Trevaine). Descriptive names such as Duchy of the Westmarch or Duchy of the Silver Coast suit frontier or coastal territories.

The names below combine real historical duchies for reference, original names in English, German and French registers, and descriptive regional forms, along with a few Grand Duchies and Archduchies for realms that outrank their neighbours. Use them for a Crusader Kings dynasty, a fantasy map, or the noble house at the heart of your novel.
