Real racehorse names are governed by rules, and those rules give derby horse names their particular flavor. Owners also reach for Kentucky imagery (bourbon, bluegrass, roses, twin spires), betting slang (Overlay, Exacta Box, By a Nose), music, patriotism and pure attitude. The result is a name that reads well on a tote board, sounds good in a track announcer's stretch call, and tells racing fans a little story.
