About horse race names

Horse race names are built from a small vocabulary that has barely changed in two centuries. The core word tells you the type of race: a Stakes is a race where owners put up entry money, a Handicap assigns weights to level the field, a Derby is for three-year-olds, an Oaks is the fillies' equivalent, Guineas races are the mile classics, a Cup or Plate is a prize race, and over jumps you get Chases and Hurdles. Almost every real race name pairs one of these words with a modifier: the racecourse (Epsom, Cheltenham, Saratoga), a patron or royal (King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince of Wales's), a legendary horse (Eclipse, Ruffian, Man o' War) or a sponsor.

Beyond that, racecards use conditions words that make a fictional race feel real: Novices', Juvenile, Maiden, Nursery, Fillies', Selling, Invitational, Trial and Memorial. British and Irish names lean traditional (Gold Cup, Champion Hurdle, Cesarewitch), American names lean toward Stakes and Handicap with grand descriptors (Classic, Invitational, Futurity), and continental Europe uses Prix, Gran Premio and Grosser Preis.

What is the difference between a stakes race, a handicap and a classic?

A stakes race is one where owners pay entry fees that form part of the prize, and it usually attracts the best horses. A handicap assigns different weights to give every runner a theoretical chance. A classic is one of the traditional three-year-old championship races, such as the Derby, Oaks or Guineas.

Why are so many horse races named after people?

Racing has always relied on patrons. Races are named for royals and aristocrats who founded or sponsored them (the Derby is named after the 12th Earl of Derby), for great horses, and increasingly for commercial sponsors, which is why real race names change when sponsorship deals do.
