Imported warmbloods often arrive with a name from their studbook, and jumper riders frequently keep it or borrow the convention: European stallion lines like Cornet Obolensky, Casall, Chacco Blue, and Diamant de Semilly have made C-, D-, and Q-names feel instantly "jumper." Dressage horses lean toward musical or literary names — Rhapsody, Nocturne, Valentino — while hunters favor understated, tasteful phrases. Breed shows add their own rules: registered names may need a farm prefix, must be under a character limit, and must be unique in the registry.

A good show name is easy to say quickly, hard to mishear, and doesn't feel silly the fiftieth time it's announced. Keep it under about 20 characters if you can, avoid names already famous in your discipline, and check your association's rules on symbols and profanity before submitting the entry.
