Fantasy Horse Name Generator

The great horses of myth and fantasy have names that stick: Shadowfax, Sleipnir, Bucephalus, Rocinante, Bayard. Almost none of them follow the 'Adjective Noun' pattern that name lists default to. Instead they come from real languages (Shadowfax is Old English for 'shadow-mane', Sleipnir is Old Norse for 'slippy one'), from a story about the horse (Widow-Maker, Bucephalus meaning 'ox-head'), or from a single strong word that describes color, temperament, or role.

This generator mixes those sources. There are legendary horses from Norse, Greek, Arthurian, and Carolingian tradition; Rohirric and Tolkien-style names like Snowmane, Felaróf, and Windfola; single-word knightly names (Valor, Steadfast, Templar) that suit a paladin's warhorse; homely farm names (Bramble, Sorrel, Old Grey) for a peasant's cob; and Anglo-Saxon personal names (Aethelred, Wulfric, Godric) that give a mount the dignity of a person.

When naming a fantasy horse, decide first who named it. A knight names a charger for a virtue or a weapon; a farm child names a pony for a plant or a color; an elf gives a name in an older tongue that humans mispronounce. That choice will tell you more about the rider than any description of the saddle.
