Greece added Lamia, Empusa, Mormo and Gello; Byzantine charms named Abyzou and Obizuth; India has Putana, Taraka and Hidimbi; Japan has the horned kijo and the jealous Hannya; and Slavic and Filipino folklore supply the Nocnitsa, Kikimora, Aswang and Manananggal. The list starts with these genuine names because they carry weight that invented ones rarely match.

The original names follow a few rules that make a demoness sound right. Sibilants and harsh stops (Zyraketh, Vexahlia, Qorraxa) signal danger; Latin abstractions for vices and suffering (Maledicta, Perditia, Lamentia, Tristessa) suggest a demon who personifies a sin; and feminized goetic names (Asmodea, Belphegora, Malphasia) tie a character to the grimoire tradition. A quieter style pairs an elegant given name with a surname drawn from poison plants, decay or old punishments (Octavia Nightshade, Prudence Gallows, Lucrezia Sanguine), which works well for a demon passing as human or a gothic villainess.

Use short mythic names for ancient powers and two-part names for urban fantasy, webcomics and OCs.
