Male Demon Name Generator

Almost every classic male demon name comes from one of a few sources, and each has its own sound. The Ars Goetia, a 17th-century grimoire, catalogues 72 demons who are overwhelmingly male and titled as kings, dukes, marquises, and presidents: Paimon, Asmodeus, Bael, Stolas, Marchosias, Naberius. Their names are Latinised corruptions of older Hebrew, Greek, and Near Eastern names, which gives them a formal, almost aristocratic ring. Older still are the Mesopotamian and Canaanite figures the Bible turned into devils: Baal, Moloch, Dagon, Nergal, and the wind-demon Pazuzu, plus Persian Ahriman and Aeshma (the origin of Asmodeus).

Medieval and Renaissance literature added the demons people actually recognise: Mephistopheles from Faust, Dante's Malebranche (Malacoda, Barbariccia, Rubicante), and the folk-devils Krampus and Chort. Modern fantasy layers invented names on top, and the ones that work follow a pattern of hard consonants (k, z, gh, thr), a guttural back vowel, and one or two syllables of weight: Vorthax, Kazrath, Balgoroth. Hyphenated forms like Zhal-Morath suggest a title or lineage.

For a demon living among mortals, a plain human first name with an infernal surname (Cassius Maledictus, Silas Brimhollow) is often more unsettling than a full fantasy name, because it implies the demon chose to be overlooked.
