Changeling Name Generator

The word 'changeling' covers two very different creatures. In Dungeons & Dragons, especially Eberron, changelings are a shapeshifting race descended from doppelgangers. Their true names are short, abstract concept-words like Bin, Dox, Hars, Jin, Ruse, or Cover, and they wear any number of borrowed personas on top of that. Choosing a name in this style means picking a single evocative noun or verb that hints at the character's nature: Cipher for a spy, Solace for a healer, Sleight for a thief.

In European folklore, a changeling is a fae child secretly swapped for a human baby, and names in that tradition are wilder. Irish and Welsh sources give us Aoibheann, Niamh, Rhiannon, and Tam Lin; Shakespeare adds Puck, Peaseblossom, and Cobweb; and rural superstition supplies grim epithets like the Milk-Thief or the Left One. Changeling: The Lost characters often keep a mundane human name (Wren Cottersby) that no longer quite fits them.
